Millersville, Pa. - Millersville charged back from a 14-point halftime deficit and trailed by just one with 3:58 to play. But a technical foul issued against Millersville turned the tide as Kutztown rattled off six straight points in the next 28 seconds and held to give Millersville a 68-63 loss Saturday in Pucillo Gymnasium.
Anthony Moe dunked an alley-oop pass from
Sam Light on a fastbreak that brought the Marauders within 56-55. As Kutztown pushed the ball down the floor, Coach Bernie Driscoll called a timeout, following which players from both teams went chest-to-chest.
Shawn Williams was hit with technical, giving Kutztown two made free throws from Tynell Fortune and the ball. Another foul was called against the Marauders near mid-court on the following inbounds pass, and Fortune knocked down both foul shots. Millersville turned the ball over on its next offensive trip, and Fortune laid in a fastbreak lay-up for six unanswered points.
Tommy Patterson hit a 3-pointer to bring Millersville to within 62-59 with 2:21 to play. After two KU free throws,
Eddie Callender tipped in a miss, keeping Millersville down three. But Millersville ran out of time while Kutztown made all six of its free throws in the final 1:32.
The loss was Millersville's first of the season when holding a team to fewer than 70 points (8-1). The Marauders held Kutztown to 26.3 percent shooting in the second half and 38 percent on the game. It was only the fourth time this season and the first time in 10 games that Kutztown failed to shoot 40 percent from the field. Millersville, however, could not take advantage on the offensive end, shooting just 34 percent.
Sam Light led Millersville with 14 points.
Tavon Parker added 10.
Millersville travels to Cheyney on Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tip.
