Millersville, Pa. -Â The Millersville women's basketball team led Shippensburg 27-23 at the half on Wednesday night, but the Raiders outscored the Marauders 41-23 in the second half on the way to a 64-50 win for the visitors inside Pucillo Gymnasium.
It was a tale of two halves as Millersville (11-15, 8-13 PSAC) shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the first half to just 27.6 percent by Shippensburg (17-9, 13-7 PSAC). However, in the second stanza, the Marauders went cold from the field with a clip of only 27.3 percent while the Raiders found their mojo to shoot 40.9 percent. Millersville failed to make a free throw (0-of-7) for the first time since at least the beginning of the 2002-03 season.
The home team's largest lead came in the first eight minutes when it led 13-6 with 12:03 to go until the intermission. In that opening stretch, the Marauders went 6-for-10 from the floor and their visitors turned the ball over five times.
Alexis Martin set the pace for Millersville with four points in that span. Shippensburg then used an 11-4 run over the next five minutes and 48 seconds to knot the score up at 17-17. The Marauders didn't relinquish their lead right away though and headed into the locker room up four.
The Raiders came out of the break on a mission and outscored Millersville 25-11 through the first 14 minutes and 28 seconds. The fury was fueled by seven points apiece from both Logan Snyder and Stephanie Knauer. During that time, the Marauders were just 4-of-17 from the field while the away team make eight of its 15 field goal attempts. From that point out, the deficit was never smaller than eight and grew to as big as 14 as it was in the final score.
Alex Stam and
Shelby Reimer paced the Millersville offense with 13 points apiece while Martin led the team in both rebounds (nine) and steals (three) to go with her six points, one assist and one block. That marked a career high for Stam and Reimer's highest total since scoring 19 on Jan. 7 at Pitt-Johnstown. as a team, the Marauder bench outscored Shippensburg's 20-7 but the Raiders held the advantage in second chance points, 8-3.Â
Millersville's regular-season finale comes at home on Saturday against Bloomsburg with tip set for 1 p.m. The program will recognize its three seniors in
Alexis Martin,
Carly Gallagher and
Sabina Mehmedovic. The Marauders must win and need a Kutztown loss at East Stroudsburg in order to qualify for the PSAC Tournament.
