Lock Haven, Pa. - The postseason hopes for the Millersville women's basketball team took a serious blow in Saturday's 63-59 loss at Lock Haven. The Marauders trailed by double figures in the second half and rallied to take the lead with four minutes to play. But Lock Haven outscored Millersville 10-4 in the final minutes to sweep the season series for the first time since 1970-71 and ensure Millersville its first sub-.500 regular season since 1991.
Millersville (11-14, 8-12 PSAC), with 10 losses in the last 11 games, fell behind Lock Haven by a half-game in the PSAC East standings with Saturday's defeat. Lock Haven also holds the head-to-head tiebreaker thanks to two wins over the Marauders.
A back-and-forth first half turned into what looked to be a rout for Lock Haven after the Bald Eagles outscored Millersville 21-8 from the 1:21 mark of the first half to the 10:21 mark of the second. In that nearly 12 minutes of basketball, Millersville made just 2-of-16 field goals. Millersville, however, produced a run of its own. It started when
Aunjel Van Brakle scored four consecutive points, cutting into Lock Haven's 51-39 advantage. The Marauders ripped off a 16-2 run over the next six minutes, and
Alayah Hall's seventh consecutive point put Millersville on top 55-53 with 4:02 to play.
But the Marauder offense immediately cooled, and Lock Haven got hot again. The Bald Eagles had went 0-for-9 in Millersville's comeback but scored seven consecutive points that included a 3-pointer from Rachel McDaniel that put the home team up 60-55 with 1:17 to go. Aside from Hall's layup with two seconds left, Millersville missed its final five shots from the field.
Hall led Millersville with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. It was Hall's third double-figure scoring performance in the last five games. Van Brakle added 12 points.
Millersville's final two games are at home, starting on Wednesday against Bloomsburg.
