Cheyney Pulls Away from Millersville with Free Throws Late

Cheyney, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team trailed Cheyney by as many as 16 in the second half but crawled all the way back to within one before the Wolves made 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the last 20 seconds to pull away, 66-62.

The Marauders (11-13, 8-11 PSAC) have now lost to the Wolves twice in the same season for the first time since 1982 and Wednesday night, their bench was outscored 46-28 by Cheyney inside Cope Hall. The Wolves snapped their seven-game skid to improve to 4-19 overall and 4-14 in PSAC play.

The home team was up 16, 45-29, with 15:54 to go in the game before the visitors used a 22-8 run to cut the margin to two, 53-51. Eventually, Millersville was able to pull within one, 56-55, and there was 2:25 to go in the contest. After a triple from Cheyney's Aerie DeJesus, Tyisha White sank two free throws but the Wolves' Amber Genwright made a jumper to increase the margin back to four, 61-57. Alex Stam then drilled a much needed 3-pointer with 24 seconds on the clock and again, the deficit was one, 61-60.

On the ensuing inbounds for Cheyney, Yasmin Cooper was called for an intentional foul and Destiny McFarlane made one of two at the charity stripe for the hosts. Kia Whitley-Duncan was then fouled by Alayah Hall and made both of her free throw attempts. Stam made a pair of her own on the other end to get it back to a two-point game but Genwright sealed the deal in the end with two freebies.

The visitors led by as many as six in the first half, 15-9, but the Wolves ended the half with a 29-8 fury that put them up 15, 38-23, at the intermission. Cheyney shot a red-hot 50 percent (15-for-30) in the first half including four makes in seven attempts from behind the arc.

Shelby Reimer was the leader for the Black and Gold with 12 points while Cooper turned in a double double with 10 points and 17 boards. Cooper had a total of 19 points and 33 rebounds in two games against Cheyney this season.

On the game, the Wolves shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the floor, 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from three and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) at the free throw line. Cheyney turned Millersville's 22 turnovers into 19 points and 10 of those giveways were from Wolf steals.
