Second Half Run Comes Up Short as Cheyney Upends Marauders in OT

Cheyney, Pa. – The Millersville men's basketball team cranked up its defensive pressure with a full court press in the second half clawing its way back into the contest after trailing the Cheyney Wolves 34-29 at the half. Solid defense turned into better offense with Tommy Patterson converting on a corner trey tying the game at 55-55 sending it into overtime. The Wolves ended up hitting clutch free throws down the stretch in overtime and earned the 68-65 win at Cope Hall.
The Marauders went on a 11-1 run and trailed Cheyney 50-48 with 3:58 remaining. They had a chance to win it at the buzzer when Demerik Weglinski blocked a Basir Fulmore shot. Weglinski gathered the rebound and went coast-to-coast, but his layup attempt rimmed out as time expired.
Cheyney (2-7, 1-5 PSAC) built a six point lead in overtime, but the Marauders stormed back with three-straight treys capped off by a Scott Slade Jr. 3-pointer, pulling them to within 66-65 with four seconds left in the period. The Wolves ran a successful inbounds play and Millersville was forced to send Lakeem Duncan to the free throw line where he converted both giving the Wolves there first PSAC victory of the 2015-16 season.
The Wolves snapped a Millersville five-game win streak at Cope Hall as 10 of the last 12 games have now been decided by 10 points or fewer and the last three contests have been decided in overtime.
Millersville (2-8, 2-5 PSAC) controlled the glass with a 45-36 edge. The Marauders corralled 16 offensive rebounds—two from Ricky Mosley who earned his first career double-double finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Shawn Williams finished with a team-high 20 points with most of his damage coming at the free throw line on 12-of-13 shooting. Tommy Patterson chipped in a career-high 12 points and was 2-of-6 from 3-point range.
Millersville remains on the road when it travels to Lock Haven on Saturday, Oct. 19 for a 4:30 tip.
