Clarion, Pa. - Millersville led Clarion 55-54 with 3:06 to play, but the Marauders scored just one point the rest of the way and the homestanding Golden Eagles pulled away for a 63-56 win, giving Millersville its third consecutive loss.
Millersville (1-3, 0-3 PSAC) and Clarion (2-3, 2-1 PSAC) traded the lead 12 times throughout Sunday's game. The Marauders even shot 59 percent from the field in the first half, but late in the fourth quarter, when they needed offense the most, it was no where to be found.
Aunjel Van Brakle followed a miss and scored two of her 11 points to give Millersville a one-point lead with just over three minutes remaining. Clarion's Tyra Polite, who led all scorers with 17 points, answered with a three-point play at the other end.
Yasmin Cooper hit one of two foul shots on Millersville's next trip, and that was the last point Millersville scored. Clarion upped the lead to three on a layup from Nicole Maxson, and while the Golden Eagles missed three of four shots in the final three minutes, Millersville came up empty on four consecutive offensive possessions. Jordan Bekelja canned four consecutive free throws in the final 23 seconds to give Clarion a two-possession lead and the win.
The 1-3 start is Millersville's slowest start since opening 1-4 in 2005-06 and it is the first time the team has lost three consecutive PSAC games since January of 2007.
Van Brakle and
Shelby Reimer were the lone Marauders to score in double figures. Reimer totaled 12 points and four assists. Robison totaled nine points and eight rebounds. Millersville shot a season-high 46.0 percent but also allowed an opponent to shoot over 40 percent for the third consecutive game.
The Marauders open a four-game homestand on Nov. 29 against Lincoln.
