Complete Game Notes (.PDF)GAME OVERVIEW• Millersville is in the midst of a five-game road swing that began with a 64-53 win over Mansfield as the Black & Gold are slated for a PSAC West back-to-back against the defending PSAC Champions Gannon and the Clarion Golden Eagles. The Marauders were picked to finish sixth in the PSAC Eastern Division according to the league's preseason coaches' poll and began the year with a gut-wrenching 66-65 home loss to Claflin.
• Senior
Demerik Weglinski has been a difference maker in the post through the first two games of the season. Weglinski recorded his second-straight double-double in the win over Mansfield and was phenomenal on the glass recording 17 rebounds, nine on the offensive end while chipping in 14 points.
•
Cornell Yarde II has established himself as a focal point of coach
Fred Thompson's offense. Yarde II transferred to Millersville after playing in 29 games at IUP. He was a member of the PSAC and Regional Championship winning Crimson Hawk squads during his redshirt sophomore season. Yarde II is averaging 17 points per contest and is coming off a career game against Mansfield where he slashed in the paint all game long and scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in second half.
•
Shawn Williams doesn't take many 3-pointers, averaging 2.42 attempts per game. But he has been efficient, hitting 38.7 percent, which is best on the team. In the first game of the season, Williams sunk three of his four attempts and knocked down another three against Mansfield. The trio of treys against the Mountaineers proved to be clutch as it sparked a 13-10 run to close out the first half.
• Gannon has won three consecutive home openers against Slippery Rock (2014, 64-51), California (Pa.) (2013, 59-51) and Roberts Wesleyan (2012, 66-45). The Golden Knights will need to find new leaders this year following the graduation of their top five scorers. The squad returns only 18 percent (364-2,026) of its total scoring from a year ago. Last time out, Kevin Kuteyi led Gannon's offensive unit with 12 points off the bench.
• Marcess Williams enters his second season at the helm of the Clarion Golden Eagles men's basketball program and brings an up-temp style that saw Clarion post a 10-16 overall record and a 7-15 mark in the PSAC West. The Golden Eagles return guards BJ Andrews, Cameron Grumley and Ralph Naples, along with forwards Rob Agurs and Justin Grant. Agurs, a senior transferred from PSU-Beaver and played in 14 games, scoring 112 points while dishing out 37 steals. Senior Andre' Anthony has been the leading-scorer posting 22 points against Wheeling Jesuit and
Shepherd University.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• Gannon fell to Clarion in its regular season-opener as the defending PSAC Champions only received 24 points from their starting lineup falling by a 64-46 score. Gannon dropped to 55-17 all-time in season openers, including a 7-11 mark when opening on the road. Kevin Kuteyi led Gannon's offensive unit with 12 points off the bench. Matthew Dogan was the only other Golden Knight in double digits with 10 points, also coming off the bench. The Golden Knights haven't hosted the Marauders since a 74-52 victory in 2010-11. The last three encounters have occurred on Millersville's home floor.
• Clarion enters the weekend on the heels of a commanding 67-46 victory over the Gannon Golden Knights this past Wednesday. Clarion was led by Rob Agurs who scored 12 points, dished out nine assists, hauled in seven rebounds and made three steals. The Golden Eagles led 25-21 at halftime, but came out in the second half and outscored the Knights 21-6 in the first 9 minutes and never looked back. With Clarion holding a 5-point lead (31-26), Clarion went on a 15-1 run to open up a 48-27 advantage. Clarion held their opponent to 26% from the floor as it coasted to the 67-46 road win.
