ABOUT THE SERIES• The teams first met in 1994 with the Vulcans winning the inaugural matchup by a 3-0 score. The series became an annual matchup in 2007, which was the last time the Marauders were able to score a victory over California (Pa.) (4-0). In recent years, the Vulcans have been perennial PSAC contenders reaching at least the PSAC Tournament Semifinals every year since 2008.
THE LAST MEETING (CALIFORNIA 3, MILLERSVILLE 1 - SEPT. 6, 2014)• Last season, the Vulcans entered the match ranked No. 12. The Marauders were extra fired up entering the match as they were coming off a huge upset over the No. 7-ranked Slippery Rock. The scoring began for Cal U at the 9:05 mark when Danielle Kearns slotted the ball into the back of the net after being setup by midfielder Chelsea Crocket. The Vulcans added to their lead at the beginning of the second half thanks to a Millersville defensive blunder in front of the net, which led to an own-goal making it 2-0. The Marauders responded in the 78th minute when
Kristin Lepley was on the receiving end of a brilliant corner kick by
Emily Purcell. However, the Vulcans were able to hold much of the possession through the final 10 minutes of play and were able to score an insurance goal in the final minute of the match.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• Glenn Fracis enters his second season at the helm of the Cal U women's soccer program. The Vulcans lost in the PSAC Tournament Semifinals after being crowned tournament champions in 2013. California (Pa.) posted a 12-4-6 overall record a year ago and was led in scoring by Chelsea Crockett and Janelle McCann who each recorded 30 points. Crockett was lost to graduation, but McCann is still on the team although she has struggled with injuries only appearing in 7 matches and netting only one goal. Senior Kara Novotny is enjoying a breakout season for the Vulcans as she leads the team in goals (3), points (6), shots (30) and game-winning goals (1).
• The Vulcans have struggled with offensive creativity in 2015 as they have only netted nine goals through 12 matches. Cal U has tied Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and IUP. Tthe Vulcans were unable to record more than one goal in each of the aforementioned contests.
