Millersville, Pa. – Returning home after seven road matches, Millersville was topped by Shippensburg in three straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-18).
Ever since Millersville lost two of its key contributors for the season against Philadelphia,
Kayla Wallace and
Brittany Ford, the Marauders have struggled offensively. Attempting to pick up the slack has been the duo of
Erin Harman and Kelsi Ceriana. Both Harman and Ceriana contributed six kills in the contest while freshman
Katie Witwer had strong outing, leading the Marauders with seven kills while adding three digs.
In the first set, Millersville had a healthy lead over Shippensburg until the Raiders made a run. With the score 13-8 in favor of the Marauders, Morgan DeFloria, a freshman for the Raiders, sent home a kill and Shippensburg turned the tables, making the score 14-13 in their favor. Even though the momentum shifted, the Marauders battled, tying the game as late as 18-18. Shippensburg began to pull away by recording four of the last six points via the kill to take game one.
In the second set, Shippensburg established control early, tying the set at seven points apiece and never trailing after that. With the score 12-10, Millersville could not get out of itsown way, committing three straight errors at the net as Shippensburg scored five in a row to take control of the set. Millersville never came within six points of the Raiders after this point and committed another trio of consecutive errors giving Shippensburg a commanding lead (23-12).
With Shippensburg looking to pull away in the third set at 14-10, Millersville's
Rhianna Kalescky and
Katie Witwer recorded back-to-back kills. The Raiders countered with four points of their own before the Marauders responded with three consecutive points to make the score 18-15. Shippensburg eventually topped Millersville 25-18, ending the set and match in familiar fashion with back-to-back kills.
Millersville falls to 9-7 overall and 1-6 in the PSAC. The Marauders are back in action Friday as they host Cheyney at 7 p.m.
