Millersville, Pa. - Down one set and trailing 18-8 in the second set, Millersville women's volleyball staged a stirring comeback to win the second, third and fourth sets and take the match from Kutztown Friday night in Pucillo Gymnasium (23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-14).
Erin Harman led the Marauders with 16 kills and added nine digs while freshman
Katie Witwer totaled 13 kills.
Grace Dawson had another 31 assists and recorded an impressive seven service aces, including four in a row in one spot.
Brooklyn Smith tallied 24 digs and nine assists on the night. Defensively, Kelsi Ceriana,
Rhianna Kalescky and
Emily Kaledas all recorded multiple block assists.
Kutztown won the first set 25-23, erasing a late Millersville lead by scoring five of the final six points of the set. The momentum from the first set carried into the second as Kutztown stormed to an early lead. With the help of Millersville's four errors, Kutztown ran its lead to 18-8. Coach
Brian Smith called a time out to regroup, and his Marauders responded as
Brooklyn Smith recorded a kill and
Renee Drawbaugh served for five consecutive Millersville points. After a service error, the Marauders continued their comeback taking eight out of the next nine points and tying the set at 22. Kutztown committed back-to-back errors before Ceriana sent home a kill giving Millersville the set. The Marauders outscored Kutztown 17-5 in the rally.Â
The two clubs played evenly to a 7-7 tie before Harman sent home one of her four kills in the set and Dawson served for four straight points including two aces. Kutztown staged a comeback of their own cutting the deficit to two points and forcing a Millersville timeout with the score 15-13. The Bears continued their comeback, trying the score at 19 when Zielinski recorded a kill and the Marauders committed an error. Harman responded with another kill, and then Dawson took over, recording four consecutive service aces before Harman ended the set with her fourth kill. Â
The fourth set was all Millersville as Harman, Witwer and Kalescky each had two early kills to make the lead 9-4. Reeling, Kutztown committed four consecutive errors to give Millersville a commanding 13-4 lead. Â The Marauders eventually finished off the Bears when Kutztown committed a service error, and
Taylor Smith sent home a kill to give Millersville a 25-14 set victory. Witwer led the Marauders with six kills in the final set while
Brooklyn Smith recorded eight digs and Dawson had nine assists.
Millersville improved to 13-11 on the season  and 4-10 in the PSAC. The Marauders host East Stroudsburg tomorrow at 1 p.m.
