Marauders' Furious Charge Comes Up Short
1/4/2015 5:01:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Millersville, Pa. - Millersville's nine-point lead over Clarion turned into a 17-point deficit with 2:57 remaining. Kelvin Parker and company, however, ripped off a 17-1 run in the game's final three minutes and nearly pulled off an epic comeback. Clarion survived with an 80-78 win only after Parker's half court heave caromed off the glass as time expired.
Millersville (6-8, 3-6 PSAC) led 54-45 following Tavon Parker's 3-pointer with 16:10 left in the game. The Marauders' offense completely disappeared for more than 13 minutes of action, though. Darius Stevens answered Parker's three with one for Clarion, setting off a 33-10 run in which Millersville shot 2-of-16 from the field and committed 10 of its 14 turnovers.
With 2:35 remaining, Tommy Patterson scored on a lay-up and hit one of two free throws nine seconds later, starting a Marauder charge that included six steals, eight Clarion turnovers and eight points from Kelvin Parker.
Parker hit back-to-back threes and then turned a steal into two more points with 1:20 remaining. Parker picked off another pass, and Sam Light converted a 3-point play to cut the Clarion lead to 79-75 with 1:01 to play. With 21 seconds to play, Shawn Williams stole the ball from Cameron Grumley and was fouled driving to the hoop. He made the first but missed the second. While Rob Agurs grabbed the rebound for Clarion, he fell out of bounds and launched the ball toward the Clarion hoop. Tavon Parker tracked down the pass and pushed it ahead to Williams, who, in a race against the clock, scored an open lay-up with two seconds left.
Millersville fouled B.J. Andrews quickly on the inbounds pass. He missed the first and made the second. Kelvin Parker tossed a running half court shot from the right sideline that banked wide as time expired.
Parker matched his career-high with 28 points, scoring 17 in the first half and eight in the final three minutes. He also grabbed seven rebounds and four steals. Williams totaled 13 points and five assists, and Sam Light totaled 11 points.
Millersville failed to win three games in a row for the second time this season and could not bring its record to .500. Millersville's two home losses have come by a total of three points.
Millersville travels to Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
