Shippensburg, Pa. -Â The Millersville women's basketball team used a 20-8 run to pull within three, 56-53, late in the second half at Shippensburg but the Raiders answered with an 11-2 run of their own to outlast the Marauders 67-55 Saturday afternoon in Heiges Field House.
Millersville (10-8, 7-6 PSAC) dropped a half game behind Shippensburg into fourth place with the loss and has lost its last four games. The Raiders (11-7, 7-5 PSAC) tied the all-time series up at 45-45, have won four straight and five of their last six.Â
The home team led by as many as 15, 48-33, with 12:35 to go until the final buzzer but the Black and Gold didn't go away quietly. The Marauders embarked on a 20-8 run as mentioned above that was fueled by six points apiece by
Alexis Martin and
Shelby Reimer. During that stretch, Shippensburg was just 3-of-17 from the field to 6-for-14 by the visitors. However, over the final three minutes and change, the Raiders scored 11 of a possible 13 points to pull the game away from the away team and win by 12.
The first half was a tight one that saw three ties and five lead changes. Millersville opened things up with a 7-2 fury before the hosts scored six straight to pull ahead by one, 8-7. After two more ties, Shippensburg used a 13-4 run to go up nine, 22-13, with 7:21 to go until the intermission. From that point until the break, the slimmest margin was four on two occasions but the Raiders headed into their locker room up six, 32-26.
Shippensburg controlled points in the paint 32-18 and second chance points to the tune of 17-9. The Raiders also handled the rebounding battle 47-34 including 18-10 on the offensive glass. Individually, Reimer led the way for the Marauders with 11 points and Martin added a double double with 10 points, 11 boards and a career-high four blocks. That marked her sixth career double double and third of the season.
Millersville will travel to Bloomsburg on Wednesday and tip is set for 5:30 p.m.inside Nelson Field House.
