Complete Game Notes (.PDF)GAME OVERVIEW• Don't look now, but the Marauders sit only a half-game out of third place in the PSAC East after beating Lock Haven by 21 points Wednesday evening. The Marauders have won two in a row and four of the last six with those two losses coming by a combined total of 10 points. But Millersville has yet to win three in a row this season, and it now faces a Shippensburg club that is only a half game behind the Marauders in the standings. Millersville must also solve its road woes as it is 1-6 this season. While Millersville has won seven of the last 10 meetings with Shippensburg, the Marauders are just 3-11 in Heiges Field House under Coach
Fred Thompson. When Millersville lost at Heiges last season,
Kelvin Parker was not in the lineup, and he is playing like one of the best players in the PSAC over the last two months.
• Parker is excelling at both ends of the court, ranking fourth in the PSAC in scoring average (16.7), first in steals per game (3.1), fifth in free throw percentage (.875), 19th in rebounding (6.2), 14th in 3-point field goal percentage , sixth in 3-pointers per game (2.4) and
third in minutes played per game (35.4). He is also tied for 10th in Division II in steals per game. He's played exceptionally well over the last seven games, in which he has averaged 20.6 points per game on 50.5 percent shooting from the field, 37.3 percent from 3-point range and has made all 21 of his free throws. He is also tied for the team lead in rebounds at 6.7 per game and has totaled 26 steals in the stretch. Millersville is 4-2 this season and 6-3 over the last two seasons when the Parker brothers play together.
• Another reason for the Marauders' improved play is freshman
Sam Light. Light has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games and is averaging 14.1 points in just 21.1 minutes of action. In his last seven games, Light has hit 48.1 percent of his shots, 44.1 percent of his threes and 34-of-35 free throws. It is a remarkable turnaround for the freshman, who avearged just 9.0 points per game on 26.6 percent shooting from the field and 22.2 percent shooting from three over his first 10 games. Light has made 17 consecutive free throws.
• Light's 88.9 percent shooting from the line ranks third in the PSAC, but he has shot 81 free throws--45 more than the leader and 53 more than the No. 2 shooter. Light is well on his way to snapping a school record set in 1960 for best free throw percentage in a season. But he isn't the only Marauder hitting from the line. Parker ranks fifth in the PSAC (.875),
Shawn Williams is 20th (.750). Millersville third as a team (.744) and is the only team with three players ranked in the top 20 in free throw percentage.
•
Sam Light leads all Marauders in plus/minus at +30 on the season. Only
Tavon Parker (+9) and
Shawn Williams (+3) are in the positive. Of lineups that have logged at least eight minutes together, the quintet of Williams, Parker, Parker, Callender and Light is most successful, boasting a +31 mark over 25:12 minutes of work together.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• Second-year Chris Fite has the Raiders on the rise after a 2013-14 season that saw his team go 3-23 with a 1-15 PSAC record. That one win, however, came in the regular season finale against Millersville. Shippensburg has already scored eight wins--the most since 2011-12--including a 7-3 record at Heiges. Much of the improvement can be credited to the return of big man Dylan Edgar, who became a member of the 1,000-point club earlier this week. He redshirted last season after earning All-PSAC East Second Team honors as a junior in 2012-13. A 6-10, he will be a handful for the Marauders, and he is averaging nearly a double-double, ranking eighth in the league in scoring and first in rebounding. Ship is among the better defensive clubs in the PSAC, ranking second in 3-point field goal defense, sixth in scoring and fifth in field goal percentage defense. It has allowed just two teams to score 80 or more points this season.
