Marauders Earn First 4-0 Start Since 2011

Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville volleyball team is 4-0 for the first time since 2011. The Marauders rolled past Holy Family in three sets before dropping their first set of the season against Chestnut Hill. Millersville took that match as well, though, three sets to one.

The home team defeated the Tigers with set scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-18. In the Marauders' last match of the Marauder Clash, they took the first set against the Griffins 25-21 to push their streak to 10-straight sets won. That streak was halted when Chestnut Hill won the second set, 25-17, but Millersville rallied to take sets three and four by scores of 25-15 and 25-13, respectively.

The hosts opened the first set against Holy Family on a 7-3 run that was catapulted by five errors from the Tigers. The visitors cut the defict to one point on two occassions with the last being 8-7 before the Marauders reeled off 13 of the next 17 points and were leading, 21-11. Stephanie Kovacs and Kayla Wallace each had two kills apiece during that stretch. After a small 3-1 run by Holy Family, Millersville scored the final three points to win the first set.

The Marauders stormed out to a 6-2 lead in the second set before the Tigers scored six of the next nine and trailed by just one, 9-8. Millersville then closed the set on a 16-6 run and were up two sets to none. The Marauders posted a blistering hitting percentage of .346 with 13 kills and four errors on 26 chances in that set.

The home team cooled off a bit in a third set that saw four ties and one lead change. Midway through the set, Holy Family scored to cut Millersville's lead to two, 11-9. The Marauders then sealed the set and the victory with a 14-5 run.

Kovacs was the only Marauder with double-digit kills (11) and Victoria Biggins supported the attack with 32 assists. Defensively, three players had double-figure digs including Brooklyn Smith (18), Biggins (12) and Erin Harman (12). Katie Lesinski had three block assists while Mary Paul had two along with a solo.

In the day's second match, the Griffins were up 3-0 to start the first set before a 10-2 run from Millersville that put the Marauders up 10-5. Harman tallied three kills during that stretch and Kovacs and Paul each added two apiece. Over the course of the next 13 points, Millersville led 7-6 before Chestnut Hill called a timeout to talk things over. The Griffins then outscored the Marauders 7-5 to cut the deficit to four, 22-18 and Millersville called a timeout of its own. The visitors came out of the break with the same mindset, scored the next three points and trailed by just one, 22-21. The Marauders punched back though and scored the final three points to take the first set.

The second set was the tightest of the match that saw eight ties and three lead changes. Millersville's last lead was by one point and came at 16-15 before Chestnut Hill scored 10 of the final 11 sets to give the Marauders their first dropped set of the season.

In the third set, Millersville registered a red-hot hitting percentage of .433 thanks to 16 kills and three errors on 30 total attacks. That momentum carried into the fourth set when the Marauders cruised to a 25-13 set victory with 12 kills and four errors on 27 chances.

Three Marauders sent home double-digit kills including Harman (16), Lesinski (14) and Paul (10). Harman has led the team in kills for two of their four matches. Biggins delivered 41 assists, Brooklyn Smith dug out 22 balls and Wallace had two solo blocks.

There was movement in the record books after Millersville's first four matches of the season as Lesinski moved into eighth on the career kills chart (948) and sixth on the career attack attempts chart (2,812) while Brooklyn Smith jumped up one spot to fifth on the career digs chart (1,242).

Millersville is at the Wilmington Tournament next and play in Delaware will begin on Sept. 12 against Bentley at 5 p.m.
