Millersville, Pa. - Jalen Hendricks and Drew Powell rallied Livingstone from a 12-point deficit with two touchdowns in the final 1:26 to snatch a season-opening win away from Millersville Thursday evening at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium, 46-44.
Millersville produced 503 yards of total offense--the most since Sept. 30, 2006--and received brilliant debuts from quarterback
Matt Misley and
Malont'a Patterson. Misley went 16-for-29 with 244 yards and four touchdowns, and Patterson caught five passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns and added a 44-yard rushing touchdown.
Myron Myles added 97 yards rushing on 14 carries. But when the Marauders needed one yard to put the win away, Livingstone made a stop.
Patterson's third touchdown of the game with 13:37 left in the fourth quarter put the Marauders in front 44-26. Powell and the Bears answered with a nine-play, 59-yard drive that included a 33-yard TD strike to Hendricks in a third-and-23 situation. The Marauders punted on their next offensive possession, but
Matt Brinser intercepted a Powell pass at the Livingstone 25-yard line, setting the Millersville offense in prime position to seal the win.
Myles and
David Coates lugged the ball down to the Livingstone 2, but on fourth-and-goal, the Marauders elected to go for the touchdown, and Myles was stuffed at the 1. The game seemed still in hand as Livingstone trailed by 12 with 2:40 left and no timeouts. Powell, however, took over. Two quick completions and a 23-yard rush pushed Livingstone into Millersville territory on just three plays. A pass interference penalty--one of Millersville's school record 19--set up a Powell to Hendricks 16-yard TD toss, making the score 44-40 in favor of the Marauders.
With 1:26 remaining, Livingstone attempted an onside kick, and the first landed in the hands of
P.J. Santos. Both teams, however, were flagged for off-setting penalties, and the kick was retried. The following Leonardo Manzo kick glanced off the hands of a Marauder and was quickly grabbed by Billy Moore at the Millersville 42. Powell needed only three plays to complete the improbable comeback. He hit Hendricks for 12 yards, rushed for five and then found Hendricks for 25 yards and a touchdown.
Trailing 46-40, Millersville's final drive started at its own 35. Misley drove the Marauders into field goal range using a 24-yard completion to Patterson. The Marauders hustled to the line, handed the ball to Myles, who dove forward for five yards, and the Marauders called their final timeout with 19 seconds left. Misley and Patterson tried to hook up one more time on a comeback route on the sideline, but the ball glanced just off the fingertips of Patterson, stopping the clock with 14 ticks left.
Evan Stahl was called upon for the game-winning field goal try. His 40-yard attempt had plenty of leg but sailed just wide right.
Hendricks finished with 14 catches, 211 yards and five touchdowns. Powell threw for 256 and rushed for 75, accouting for six total scores. Millersville intercepted Powell twice. Freshman linebacker
Logan Kinser picked Powell on the first drive of the third quarter and rumbled 61 yards for a touchdown, but a penalty brought back the score. In addition to his fourth-quarter pick, Brinser recovered a third-quarter fumble that led to a Misley to Patterson touchdown.
P.J. Santos scooped a fumble and scored from 14-yards out with 6:10 left in the third. His score gave Millersville a 37-20 lead.
Millersville scored first on a 64-yard TD reception from freshman Kevin Wiggins. Livingstone answered to take a 13-6 lead, but Millersville scored 24 unanswered from the 10:44 mark of the second quarter to the 9:05 mark of the third. Millersville eclipsed the 40-point mark for the first time since the 2012 season opener. The Marauders' 259 yards rushing were the most since piling up 280 against Cheyney in 2008. The Marauders fall to 50-60-9 all-time in season openers.
The Marauders host PSAC West foe Clarion on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m.
