Clarion Capitalizes on Marauders' Miscues

Millersville, Pa. - In just a matter of seconds, Millersville went from trailing Clarion 7-0 with the end of the first half nearing, to trailing 28-0 one drive into the third quarter. Five Millersville turnovers and an onside kick that went to Clarion resulted in a wave of misfortune for the Marauders. The game ended in a 55-16 score.

A Millersville (0-2, 0-1 PSAC East) fumble two plays into the game set the stage for a long afternoon. Clarion (1-1, 1-0 PSAC West) quickly capitalized using two passes from Darelle Carson to Eric Frye to go ahead 7-0 56 seconds into the contest. But neither team mustered much offense for the remainder of the first half. That is, until the final minute of the second period.

Clarion took over on its own 9-yard-line with 3:28 remaining following a Millersville punt. Clarion drained the clock and reached the Millersville 49 before punting it deep. With 33 seconds left in the half and on its own 12, Millersville's Matt Misley, who threw four touchdowns and no picks in the season opener, threw a short pass that was intercepted and returned for six by Connor Scott. Clarion then lofted a high kickoff that was recovered at the Millersville 33 by Brandon Short. The Golden Eagles took full advantage of the field position. Connor Simmons hit Caleb Mancini for 24 yards to the Millersville 9, and one player later, Simmons found Mark Nicolas for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead heading into the half.

Clarion scored on its opening possession of the second half, giving it 21 points in under four minutes of game clock. Millersville answered with a 39-yard field goal from Evan Stahl and a 51-yard TD toss from Misley to Kevin Porter on the following possession. The Marauders recovered an onside kick of their own with 5:25 left in the third quarter, and on fourth and 11 from the 19-yard-line, freshman Malont'a Patterson hauled in a leaping catch in traffic to close the gap to 35-16.

Little went right for the Marauders after that. Millersville recovered a fumble on Clarion's next offensive possession but immediately gave it back. A punt was tipped and Eric Frye returned it 29 yards for a touchdown. A Clarion sack of J.J. Paige resulted in a fumble and Jerome Matthews scooped and raced 66 yards to the Millersville 10, setting up a 10-yard rush from Johnnie Martin.

Clarion out-gained Millersville 357-284. Delrece Williams rushed for 92 yards and two scores. Misley finished 13-of-24 for 156 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. Patterson caught five passes for the second consecutive week and brought his season touchdown total to four. He also added 100 kick return yards, giving him 183 all-purpose yards.

The Marauders play their third consecutive game at home on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Slippery Rock.
