Box Score Erie, Pa. - The Millersville women's lacrosse team surged to a 7-1 lead over the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday afternoon, but the Laker attack heated up in the second half to beat the Marauders, 21-13.
Millersville (3-2, 0-1 PSAC) stormed out to the early 7-1 lead thanks in part to three goals from
Renee Landis and two from
Hannah Vogel over that span. Mercyhurst (5-1, 1-0 PSAC) was able to stop the bleeding and controlled play the rest of the way, outscoring the Black and Gold 19-6 throughout the remaining play. The Marauders led 10-7 at halftime intermission, but the second half was won by the Lakers, 13-3.
What helped Mercyhurst control play was their ability to win draw controls. Both teams were even in turnovers (21-21) and the Lakers had a slight advantage in groundballs (21-18), but the disparity in draw controls was 27-9 in favor of Mercyhurst.
Landis and Vogel carried the Marauders throughout the match. Both players finished the match with four goals and combined scored eight goals on just nine shots. Mercyhurst positioned its defense well to minimize the effect of the Marauders leading scorer
Brooke Fisher. Fisher had scored four or more goals in every game this season, prior to her two goal effort against the Lakers. The senior mustered a season low three shots on goal in the contest, but did finish with two caused turnovers, two groundballs, and three draw controls.
The Marauders were not able to stop the Lakers' top scorers. Mercyhurst received 75 percent of its scoring from three players. Becca Himes, Mackenzie Jordan, and Hannah Corton combined for 15 goals on the day, with Himes leading all scorers with seven points.
Millersville received a goal and an assist from both
Caitlin Shannon and
Ella Callahan, while senior
Becky Donkin recorded her second goal of the year. Donkin was tied for the team lead with Landis in groundballs, both midfielders scooped up three ground balls.
Sophomore keeper
Kaitlin Crouthamel faced a season high 38 shots and made a career high 10 saves. However, the flurry of shots did result in 20 goals, which is the first time this year the Marauders have given up more than 12 scores to an opponent.
The Marauders return home following three consecutive road matches in which the they went 1-2 and suffered two losses to nationally recognized opponents (Queens (N.C.) and Mercyhurst). Millersville's first of three home games next week comes on Tuesday, March 25 against East Stroudsburg. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
