Parker-less Marauders Fall at Shippensburg
2/26/2014 9:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Shippensburg, Pa. - Leading scorer Kelvin Parker sat on the bench resting an injury and Millersville's playoff seeding was already locked. Shippensburg, however, had one last chance to get a conference win and with a season-best offensive performance, the Raiders did just that by a 92-87 score.
Shippensburg (3-23, 1-15 PSAC East) entered the game averaging just over 65 points per game but shot 48.4 percent from the field and 9-for-20 from three for a season-high in points. The Raiders' previous season high was 81 points. Millersville's (12-13, 8-8 PSAC East) road woes continued, dropping to 2-11 away from Pucillo, and it allowed more than 80 points for the seventh time in 13 road games. Millersville is now just 2-8 when allowing 80 or more points and is now 3-11 inside Heiges Field House under Coach Fred Thompson.
Brandon Brown scored a season-high 21 points, Tyree Smith added 17, and Jalen Lester totaled 15. Only seven Raiders played in the game and five of them landed in double figures. Jay Hardy dropped a career-high 25 points.
Shippensburg scored 47 points in the first half and led by as many as 16 in the opening stanza. The lead remained in double digits most of the second half, and the Raiders held a 10-point lead entering the final two minutes. The Marauders furiously tried to close the gap and four consecutive points from Smith slashed Ship's lead to 89-84 with 37 seconds left.
Millersville forced a turnover but failed to cut the deficit to one possession when Kyle Richardson missed a pair of free throws. Shippensburg hit 3-of-4 free throws in the final two possession while Millersville came empty until Lester made a too-little-too-late three in the waning seconds.
The Marauders are the No. 5 seed from the PSAC East in the conference tournament and travel to play fourth-seeded Lock Haven on Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m.
