Kutztown, Pa. - The Millersville women's basketball team defeated Kutztown 71-58 on the road Saturday afternoon thanks in part to 25 points from
Carly Gallagher as well as 14 points and a remarkable 20 rebounds from
Yasmin Cooper. That mark ties the most rebounds in a game for a Marauder since Kristy Garner tallied 20 on Feb. 15, 2003 against West Chester. Garner also had 21 in the same season against Cheyney.
Millersville (5-3, 3-1 PSAC East) has now won two straight games for the second time this season since starting 2-0 while the Golden Bears (3-3, 2-2 PSAC East) have dropped two of their last three. The Marauders outscored their hosts 19-10 in points off turnovers, 17-9 in second chance points and 40-30 in points in the paint while outrebounding Kutztown 48-38 including 15-8 on the offensive glass.
The first half saw six ties, the biggest lead that either team held was five and Kutztown was up by that many on three different occasions with the last coming at the 8:55 mark, 17-12. Five of the six ties came after that juncture and Millersville went into the locker room up two, 30-28.
Aunjel Van Brakle was the first half leader with eight points on 3-of-3 shooting including 1-for-1 from behind the arc and 1-of-2 at the free throw line.
Out of the intermission, the visitors pushed their lead to six, 43-37 with 15:41 to play in the game. After the Golden Bears scored five straight to pull within one, 43-42, the Marauders scored 11 of the next 13 points and the advantage was back to 10, 54-44, with 10:36 to go in the contest. Gallagher fueled the run with nine of the 11 points with the other two coming from
Alexis Martin. After that, Kutztown couldn't get any closer than seven points and Millersville led by as many as 15, 71-56 with 47 seconds to play.
Aside from her game-high 25 points, 20 of which came in the second half, Gallagher registered nine rebounds, four assists and one steal.
Shelby Reimer also turned in nine points to go with seven rebounds and three assists.
Van Brakle had three rebounds, one assist and two blocks to go with those eight total points.
Next up, the Marauders have a little break before traveling to Slippery Rock and Edinboro on Dec. 16 and 17, respectively. Both of those games are set to tip at 5:30 p.m.
