Millersville, Pa. - Millersville women's basketball turned a three-point halftime lead into a 69-51 victory over Mansfield Wednesday evening in Pucillo Gymnasium thanks to a 15-2 run to start the second half.
In less than four minutes, Millersville made 7-of-11 field goals, and
Carly Gallagher scored nine of her game-high 18 points in the stretch. It helped the Marauders overcome a slow start in which it totaled 28 first half points on 39.1 percent shooting. Millersville torched the nets for 48.5 percent shooting in the second half, and four players finished in double figures.
Millersville led from start to finish, but Mansfield pulled within one with 3:21 left in the first half.
Alex Stam's 3-pointer was countered by Becky Evans' lay-up that made the score 28-25 at the break. It was all Marauders from there, though.
Gallagher opened the second period by scoring four consecutive points and
Yasmin Cooper followed with four more. The team made four of its first five shots. The Marauders lead by as many as 18 points on two occasions and coasted home for an 18-point win--its largest of the season.
The win snapped Millersville's two-game losing streak, improving the team's record to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in PSAC Eastern Division play. Cooper recorded season highs in points with 18 and also set a career-high with four assists. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Gallagher has scored in double figures in all seven games this season. Â
Alex Stam scored a career-high 11 points, and
Alexis Martin added 11 points and eight boards.
Millersville travels to Kutztown on Saturday for a PSAC East game starting at 1 p.m.
