Millersville, Pa. -Â Once again, the Millersville women's basketball team turned to
Carly Gallagher late who scored nine of the Marauders final 13 points and led Millersville to a 49-48 victory over CIAA foe Chowan.
The Marauders (2-0) have won their first two games of the season for the ninth-straight year while the Hawks (0-2) have lost eight of their last 10 dating back to the end of last season. Gallagher scored 44 points in two games over the weekend and 15 of those came at the charity stripe (15-for-20) including five in the second half of Saturday's contest.
With 8:52 to play in the second half, Chowan controlled its biggest lead of the game and was up nine, 37-28. Millersville then caught fire with a 14-5 run over the course of the next seven minutes and 23 seconds to go up 42-39. Before that point, the Marauders hadn't led since the 16:58 mark of the second half. During the run, both Gallagher and
Sabina Mehmedovic poured in six points, the home team was 4-of-7 from the floor and 6-for-8 at the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Hawks made just two of their 10 field goal attempts during the switch in momentum.
Chowan's Rachel Gostomski answered with a triple that tied the game back up at 42-42 before the two schools were knotted up again at 44-44. Gallagher gave the hosts a 47-44 lead with a 3-point play the old-fashioned way, but the visitors then sunk a layup and two free throws to go up one with just under a minute left. Millersville called a timeout with 48 seconds left and drew up a play for Gallagher.
Shelby Reimer started with the ball on the right wing and dished it to
Alexis Martin at the top of the key. Martin then gave it to Gallagher who came off Martin's screen. Gallagher held the ball at the left wing and then created her own shot like she had all afternoon. The fifth-year senior drove into the paint and made a floater with just 29 seconds until the final buzzer.
From that point on, the Hawks missed three bunnies and a 3-pointer as they were unable to convert in the final seconds.Â
The first half wasn't a pretty one as it saw a combined 25 turnovers and the teams combined to shoot just 16-of-63 from the floor and 3-for-10 at the free throw line. The Marauders were able to end the first 20 minutes with a 10-2 fury.
Gallagher turned in 17 points, Reimer had 12 and Mehmedovic earned the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 10 boards.
Yasmin Cooper tallied nine rebounds and
Courtney Hinnant added eight of her own. As a team, Millersville outscored Chowan 26-16 in the paint 16-8 in points off turnovers.
Wednesday, the Marauders will jump right into PSAC East play as they travel to West Chester for a 5:30 p.m. start. The Golden Rams are also 2-0 and were picked to win the east by the league's coaches.
