Callender's Big Debut Not Enough for Marauders

Lincoln University, Pa. - One first half run gave Bowie State all the cushion it needed in Friday's season opener with Millersville. The Marauders received 22 points, eight boards and seven steals in Eddie Callender's debut, but they could not erase the early deficit and fell, 76-64.

Millersville (0-1) jumped out to a 9-6 lead over the CIAA Northern Division preseason favorite on a Tommy Patterson 3-pointer. Bowie State, however, reeled off an 18-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes to put the Marauders behind 24-11 with 8:25 left in the half. Millersville never recovered.

The Marauders trailed by as many as 17 in the first period but whittled the deficit to eight before Bowie State scored the final four points of the half. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 62 percent from the field in the first half and 51.9 percent for the game. Millersville countered with 36 percent shooting including 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from deep.

Newcomer Shawn Williams opened the second half with a triple, making the score 44-35, but that was as close as Millersville would get the rest of the way.

Bowie State was led by Ahmaad Wilson's 20 points. Callender nearly posted a triple-double in points, rebounds and steals. He shot 8-of-14 from the floor. Kelvin Parker managed 12 points and seven rebounds but battled through a cold shooting night as he connected on just 4-of-16 shots. Williams contributed 15 points and two steals.

Millersville has lost three consecutive season openers and falls to 0-7 in road openers under Fred Thompson. The Marauders stay in Lincoln University and play the host Lions Saturday at 6 p.m.
