Box Score Erie, Pa. -Â Playing without two starters, Millersville turned to freshman
Tavon Parker. Parker scored a career-high 26 points, but the Marauders were held off by Mercyhurst, 69-63.Â
Millersville's (5-7) three-game winning streak was snapped and it fell to 0-6 on the road with the loss. The Lakers' stingy defense held the Marauders to just 38.1 percent shooting. The Marauders' continued their marksmanship from 3-point range, hitting 11-of-21. Inside the arc, however, the Marauders made just 5-of-21 attempts.Â
With
Jalen Lester and
Anthony Coleman out of the lineup, the Marauders were not only without their leading scorer, but Coach
Fred Thompson was forced to break up a pair of five-man rotations that had worked so well in its previous three games. The mismatched lineup certainly played in a role in Millersville's off shooting night. Outside of Parker, the six other players who attempted shots, went 9-of-31. Parker, however, was outstanding, hitting 5-of-8 3-pointers, 7-of-12 shots from the field, and 7-of-8 from the line. The reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year has now led the team in scoring in each of the last three games, scoring 49 points in the last two, and hitting 14 of his last 22 attempts from three.Â
The Marauders were within striking distance of Mercyhurst the entire game. Millersville led by six early in the first half, the score stood tied at 28 at the half, and Mercyhurst's largest lead was 38-29 early in the second period. After falling behind by nine, the Marauders ripped off a 13-4 run fueled by seven made free throws in a four-minute stretch.Â
Millersville knotted the game at 42-42 on a pair of Parker foul shots, but Mercyhurst immediately answered with a Greg Williams 3-pointer. Mercyhurst had an answer for every Marauder score. Millersville never again tied the game or took the lead. With just over two minutes remaining, Parker scored his second of back-to-back buckets, pulling Millersville to within 63-61. Millersville, however, came up empty on its next three offensive possesions, and Lakers Callon Dailey and Jonathan Ouegnin put the game away at the stripe.
Millersville entered the game as the second-best offensive rebounding team in the league but pulled down just two offensive boards against the Lakers, which held a 34-19 edge on the glass. Parker's 26 were the most by any Marauder this season, and he was the only Marauder in double figures on the night.Â
Wednesday's game was the final non-conference game of the season for the Marauders. They return to PSAC East action on Saturday at Mansfield.Â
