GAME NOTES
· Millersville rings in 2014 in the friendly confines of Pucillo Gymnasium where it boasts a 3-1 record this season. The Marauders are an impressive 152-64 (.704) under
Fred Thompson and 90-121 on the road. In four home games, the Marauders are averaging 75.2 points per game and 32.3 percent shooting from three but 70.2 points and 29.6 percent shooting from three on the road. The defense also improves by 3.8 points.Â
· Millersville has already had 10 first-year players log minutes this season and with
Josh Jones and
Tremaine Bowman no longer on the roster, the Marauders added redshirt junior
Carl Wallace and redshirt freshman
Ryan Aker this week, brining the total to 13 first-year players on the roster. Not surprisingly, the Marauders have had to use trial and error to find its best lineup. Millersville has employed five different starting lineups through nine games. Only
Xavier Mumford has started all nine games and 10 different players have started at least two games. Twelve different players averaged nearly 10 minutes of playing time per game. Because mix-and-matching of lineups, it isn't a shock that Millersville's bench has provided an average of 33.8 points per game and at least 27 in every game. The lineup of Bollinger, Brandon, Mumford, Lester and Coleman has played the most at 33:01. That has been the starting lineup for the last three games as Coleman and Lester both missed games at the start of the season. Wallace, a 6-5 forward from Barton Community College is expected to receive significant playing time right away.
· Since returning from an injury, Coleman has played in five games, averaging 19.0 minutes and 5.8 points per game while shooting 30.6 percent from the field. Coleman averaged 30-plus minutes per game in 2011-12 and 2012-13 and hit 48 percent of his shots in that span. Coleman, however, has always thrived in the New Year. Last year, he averaged 8.5 points and shot 32.9 percent prior to Jan. 1 and averaged 16.4 points and shot 50.7 percent after. He boosted his average from 9.8 to 11.4 in 2011-12 and also improved by 1.5 points as a freshman. Â
· Thompson boasts plenty of success against Slippery Rock and Edinboro, posting a combined 19-8 record. He won his first nine games against Slippery Rock. Four of the games against Edinboro have been played in the postseason with the series being split.
· Edinboro has never won in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Fighting Scots struggled shooting in the building last season, hitting just two threes and a season-low 19 field goals.
Anthony Coleman scored 18 in last season's games. Slippery Rock also visited Pucillo last season. Millersville led by double-digits with two minutes left in the first half, but Slippery Rock scored 26 of the next 28 points over the next nine minutes and held on for a 66-64 win.
ABOUT THE ROCK
· Slippery Rock is the top rebounding team in the PSAC, averaging more than 43 boards per game and out-rebounding opponents by 11 per game. Slippery Rock is also the top field goal percentage defense in the PSAC, holding teams to 36 percent shooting. Slippery Rock's Maurice Lewis-Briggs is a difficult match-up for just about any player in the league at 6-8. The Morehead State transfer leads the team in scoring at 15 points per game, hitting 51.1 percent of his shots and 36.4 percent of his threes. Tabari Perry is another 6-8 weapon, and he is also a multidimensional threat, hitting 53.7 percent of his shots and 39.5 percent of his threes. He's leading the team at 7.4 rebounds per game.
ABOUT THE FIGHTING SCOTS
· Like Slippery Rock, Edinboro is a team that thrives on the glass. Edinboro ranks second in the PSAC in rebounding with 43.7 rebounds per game. Edinboro holds a slight edge over Millersville as the best offensive rebounding team in the league. The Fighting Scots average over 10 offensive rebounds per game. Edinboro is extremely accurate from 3-point range, hitting 35.8 percent as a team. Johnny Marsh is the top 3-point shooter in the PSAC, hitting 48.3 percent (28-of-58). Johnathan Logan is also dangerous from deep, hitting 39.4 percent (26-of-66). Marsh averages 18.4 points per game, tying for the team lead with center Bryan Theriot. Theriot has scored over 1,000 career points and was an All-PSAC West First Team pick last season. He averages 18.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, and teams that foul him pay the price, as he has hit an incredible 90.8 percent of his free throws (59-of-65).
