Marauders Overcome Slow Start to Drop Cheyney

Box Score Cheyney, Pa. - Millersville's first road win did not come easy. After scoring just two points through the first 10 minutes, the Marauders roared back and held on late for a 69-65 win over Cheyney Saturday afternoon.

Millersville (7-8, 3-3 PSAC East) won for the fifth time in the last seven games and broke through with its first road win in eight tries by overcoming an incredibly slow start in which it went 0-for-9 from the field and committed six turnovers by the mid-way point of the first half. The game featured sizable runs for both teams. The Marauders trailed by as many as 15, led by as many as 22 and won by only four. Seven of the last nine games played between the teams in Cope Hall have been decided by fewer than seven points and each of the last five games overall have been decided by fewer than eight.

Millersville, the PSAC's leader in 3-pointers made per game, attempted a season-low 15 threes and made only six--more than four below its average. The Marauders made up for it by forcing 20 Cheyney turnovers on 13 steals and scoring 23 points off of those miscues. Millersville has now forced double-digit steals in five of the last six games. Brandon Brown scored a season-high 14 points. Kelvin Parker overcame an 0-for-8 shooting start to score 13 points. He also added eight rebounds and four steals.

After its sluggish start, the Marauders trailed 23-9 with 6:32 left in the half but countered with an 18-6 run. The momentum rolled into the second half. After Cheyney scored the opening bucket to lead 31-27, Millersville posted a 30-4 run over the next 10 minutes to not only take a lead but pushed it to 21. The Marauders led by as many as 22 before Cheyney made the game interesting late.

The Wolves outscored Millersville 29-9 over the final eight minutes and pulled to within 68-65 on a Michael Greene 3-pointer with four seconds left. Tyree Smith put the game out of reach by making the second of two free throws.

Freshman Tavon Parker scored in double figures for the sixth consecutive game. His 10 points came on 3-of-7 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting from the line. Thirteen different Marauders saw the floor and 10 provided at least two points.

Millersville and Lock Haven, both 3-3 in the PSAC East and tied in the standings, meet on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
