Men's Basketball Hangs On to Defeat Kutztown

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Millersville's 27-point first-half lead dwindled away to just one late in the second half, but the Marauders held off a hard-charging Kutztown Golden Bear club for a 77-74 home win Wednesday evening.

Millersville (6-8, 2-3 PSAC East) raced to a 42-15 lead after 15 minutes and went on to post its highest first half point total of the season at 47. Kutztown (4-11, 2-3 PSAC East), however, scored 58 points over the final 25 minutes, giving the Marauders quite a scare.

With just 50 seconds remaining, Kutztown's Austin Beidelman scored on a driving lay-up to pull the visitors to within 74-73. Millersville let time tick away at the offensive end and put the ball in the hands of senior Anthony Coleman. Coleman was fouled on a pull up jumper. Coleman hit missed the first but made the second, putting his team in front by two with 21 seconds left. Kutztown turned to Beidelman to create once again, but on his attack into the paint, Brandon Brown stripped the ball away, and the loose ball found Nate Bollinger, who was immediately fouled with four seconds left. Bollinger knocked down both shots to preserve Millersville's sixth win in seven home games.

It was the third consecutive game between Millersville and Kutztown to be decided on the final possession. The previous two went into overtime. Millersville won all three games and has now beaten the Golden Bears four times in a row for the first time since winning nine in a row from 1998-2003.

The Marauders played 13 players and 12 of them scored. Tyree Smith led the team with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three. Tavon Parker, the back-to-back winner of the PSAC East Freshman of the Week award, made his first three 3-pointers and scored all 12 of his points in the first half. But after a Smith triple put the lead at 27, the Marauders committed 16 turnovers to Kutztown's four over the final 25 minutes.

Parker and Smith helped the Marauders shoot 9-of-20 from three in the first half. Millersville finished 14-of-32 from three, making at least 11 for the seventh time this season. The Marauders used this marksmanship and a sticky defense to pull in front during the first 15 minutes. The Marauders shot 14-of-25 from the field and 8-of-14 from three in that stretch while holding Kutztown to 4-of-15 shooting and forcing 11 turnovers with eight steals.

Millersville tries to put an end to its road woes on Saturday at Cheyney. Game time is 1 p.m.
