Box Score Mansfield, Pa. - Millersville men's basketball erased a 17-point deficit and took a one-point lead over Mansfield with 38 seconds remaining. But Joe Bell, who scored a career-high 41 points, foiled the Marauder comeback with a hoop in the final seconds, lifting the homestanding Mountaineers to an 88-87 win.
There must be something about playing Millersville that Bell loves. His previous career high of 34 came against the Marauders, and on Saturday, the junior hit 14-of-20 shots from the field and 13-of-15 from line. Bell's performance provided his team with its first PSAC East win and just its third win on the season. Millersville's (5-8, 1-3 PSAC East), road woes continued, falling to 0-6.
Kelvin Parker was outstanding in his Marauder debut, scoring a team-high 24 points. His younger brother,
Tavon Parker, scored 19 points in 18 minutes, and it was Tavon's free throws in the final minute that put the Marauders momentarily in the lead. Senior
Anthony Coleman led the second half charge, scoring nearly all of his 17 points in the final 20 minutes.
Millersville has now lost six in a row at Mansfield and 10 of the last 11 against the Mountaineers. And for the second year in a row, the two teams battled to the final buzzer in Decker Gymnasium. In 2013,
Nate Bollinger made a miracle 75-foot 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. This time around, the same type of heroics were needed.
Mansfield led 73-57 with 10 minutes to play, but Coleman and Parker took control of the game. In just over nine minutes, Coleman poured in 13 points. As the clock ticked under three minutes, Parker hit a triple and threw down a transition slam dunk to pull the Marauders within one. After a Bell miss, Coleman created for
Xavier Mumford, and that bucket gave Millersville its first lead, 83-82, with 1:54 left.
The two clubs traded the lead five more times the rest of the way. Mansfield received a pair of made free throws with 49 seconds left, but
Tavon Parker coolly knocked down two, putting Millersville in front 87-86 with 38 seconds to play. Mansfield ran its final possession to the end of the shot clock and Bell took a feed from
Kenny Johnson and scored the game-winner. Millersville's last-ditch attempted ended with an intercepted pass.
Bell has now averaged over 26 points per game in five meetings against Millersville.
Coleman's 17 was a season high, and Kelvin's 24 were the most scored in a debut in
Fred Thompson's 16-year tenure. Tavon has now averaged 20.5 points per game over his last four, and has hit 18 of his last 32 3-pointers. Six of Millersville's eight losses have come by fewer than 10 points.
Millersville returns home to play Kutztown on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
