Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team ended a 10-year losing streak to Edinboro on Thursday afternoon by defeating the Fighting Scots 2-1 in the season opener.
Millersville (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) scored just 2:24 into the game on a slotted pass from junior
Kelsey Mattola to sophomore
Megan Kelley. Kelley placed the ball perfectly in the lower right corner to give Millersville a 1-0 advantage. Junior
Kristin Lepley notched the game-winner in the 46th minute and gave the Marauders a lead that they would not relinquish. Goalkeeper
Olivia Webber recorded five saves in her sixth career win.
Edinboro (0-1, 0-1 PSAC) received their only goal of the game six-minutes into play by freshman Alex Brown. Brown's first career tally came on a mid-air volley that beat Webber to the right post. Fighting Scot goalkeeper Meghan Kelly also grabbed five saves, while 2012 PSAC lead scorer Liz Debo was held to just three shots by the Black and Gold defense.
The 10-year drought against Edinboro included a stretch of six games in which Edinboro outscored the Marauders, 17-3. For Marauder head coach Michael O'Brien, it was his first victory over Edinboro and his first season-opening win against a PSAC opponent.
Millersville continued right where it left off in 2012. The Marauders finished last season with a 1-0 victory over nationally ranked West Chester. Kelley scored the game-winning goal in that contest and needed less than 150 seconds to tally her first goal of 2013.
Kelley ran down the left sideline and collected a beautifully placed pass by Mattola. The Towamencin native only had the keeper to beat and easily rifled her shot towards the right post to give Millersville the early advantage.
Edinboro answered four minutes later on Brown's volley score.
The two teams threatened throughout the rest of the half. Millersville's best opportunity came on a 12-yard blast from Lepley. Her shot sliced right and rattled off the post and away from the rest of the Millersville attack.
With the teams tied 1-1 at half, the Marauders started quickly again in the second half.
Lepley waited only one minute to find herself in scoring position. The junior, who was tied for the lead on the 2012 team with four goals, blasted a shot from 18-yards out and into the back of the cage.
Webber and the defense would take care of the final 44 minutes of play and kept the Fighting Scots out of the net.
Millersville returns to Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium to take on the Chestnut Hill Griffins Saturday, September 7 at 4:30 p.m.
