Erie, Pa – The No. 9 Millersville women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday afternoon at Gannon. Gannon's Britney Berry scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute to hand the Black and Gold the first defeat of its 2013 campaign.
The Marauders (5-1-1) and Golden Knights (4-2) each scored a goal less than a minute apart in the second half. The score held at 1-1 until Berry sealed the win for the home team in the first overtime.
Millersville edged Gannon in first half shots, 7-5. However, neither team found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes. A total of three shots were taken on goal with two of them coming from the Black and Gold.
In the second half, Gannon struck first in the 53rd minute with a goal off the foot of Sammy Valloud.
Less than a minute later, Millersville answered with a goal of its own. Megan Wilson scored her first goal of the season thanks to an assist from Sara Cressman to knot the score up at 1-1.
That score would hold until just three minutes into the first overtime period.
Mani Brueckner took a corner for the Golden Knights and sent the ball towards an empty net. To save a goal, a Millersville defender hit the ball with her hand with hopes that a penalty kick would be the result. Instead, a goal was awarded to Gannon and it took the victory, 2-1.
Olivia Webber faced 16 shots in Millersville's goal and saved six of them.
The Marauders remain in Erie, Pa. for a showdown with Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. That game is slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
