Mattola, Marauders Tie Clarion, 1-1

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - For the first time all season the Millersville women's soccer team played in a game that they did not win. The Marauders remain unbeaten though, after playing to a 1-1 tie with Clarion on Wednesday afternoon.

Millersville (4-0-1, 3-0-1 PSAC) junior Kelsey Mattola scored her first goal of the season off of an assist from freshman Alexandria Powell. The Black and Gold finished the game with 11 shots and put seven of those on the goal frame. Olivia Webber played well for the home team, recording two saves in the draw.

Clarion (2-1-2, 2-1-2 PSAC) took nine shots in the contest and scored its only goal with one second remaining in the first half. Casey Harsch notched the Golden Eagle goal on a free kick from 30-yards away. Senior Alyssa Katz led Clarion with three shots and goalkeeper Laura Saussol made six saves in the game.

In the 29th minute, Mattola put the Marauders on the board first with a 25-yard blast from the top of the circle. Powell passed the ball to Mattola from the right side of the box and her pass bounced to the top of the circle. Mattola quickly rocketed a volley shot and placed her 25-yard target perfectly under the crossbar and above Saussol's reach to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Clarion responded in heroic fashion just before the end of the first half.

With time expiring in the opening period a Marauder foul gave the visitors a free kick from 30-yards away. As the clock reached the final seconds of play, junior Casey Harsch launched a shot on the goal frame. Webber made a leaping attempt for the shot, but the ball sailed just above her hand and fell into the right upper 90, tying the game 1-1 with one second left in the first half.

Neither team could capitalize on their scoring opportunites in the second half and after 90 minutes of play Millersville would be heading towards its second-straight overtime match.

The best opportunity for the Marauders to score in the extra time came with just 90 seconds to play. Felicia Cramer beat four Clarion defenders and took the ball into the box on the left side. The sophomore played a cross to the six and right at the feet of Mattola. Mattola fired a shot at the goal, but a diving save by Saussol kept the game tied at one.

After tying a school record with five draws last season, the tie with Clarion marks the first Millersville draw of the 2013 season.

The Marauders now go on the road for a four game road trip, taking on PSAC opponents IUP, Gannon, Mercyhurst, and Shippensburg. The Black and Gold take on IUP on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Millersville does not return home until October 4, when they play in their last non-conference game of the year against Georgian Court.
