Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Freshman
Rebecca Maguire scored her first collegiate goal in grand fashion on Saturday afternoon. The rookie's golden goal in the 93rd minute lifted Millersville to a 1-0 win over the Mansfield Mountaineers and propelled the Marauders to a 4-0 start on the season.
The Marauders 4-0 record to start the year is the best since the 2000 squad began their season 5-0. The Black and Gold have now won their past three meetings with Mansfield, outscoring the Mountaineers 5-0 during that stretch.
Millersville (4-0, 3-0 PSAC) took a season low six shots in the victory. Three saves and plenty of game-changing plays by starting goalkeeper
Olivia Webber helped keep the Mountaineers off the board and preserve the win for the home team. Maguire's score was her only shot in the game and just her second target of the season.
Mansfield (0-4, 0-4 PSAC) failed to pick up their first win of the season, taking only eight shots throughout the match and putting just three on the goal frame. Karyn Anselmo led the visitors with three shots and goalkeeper Alana Krieger had three saves in the loss.
In the 93rd minute the Mountaineers fouled Millersville just inside the middle of the field. A free kick by the Marauders landed just inside the Mansfield box with a fury of players around the ball. After a failed clear, the ball bounced to the feet of Maguire who took a quick touch to her left. Without hesitation the freshman blasted a left footed shot on the cage. Krieger made a diving attempt for the ball, but Maguire's laser had already crossed the goal line and into the lower left corner of the goal.
Maguire's first career goal gave Millersville its first overtime victory since the 2009 season finale against Shippensburg.
Throughout regulation each team created multiple scoring opportunities, but both defenses and goalies did their job to keep the counterpart from placing a shot into the back of the net.
Millersvile had its best opportunity with just five minutes to play in the second half. A free kick from 30-yards out was taken by rookie
Savannah Hall. The Cumberland Valley grad drilled her free target perfectly to the lower left corner of the goal frame. Krieger was just able to get a glove on the shot and preserved the draw for the time being.
The victory moves Millersville into a tie for first place in the PSAC. The Marauders join East Stroudsburg as the only two teams to be undefeated in conference play.
The Black and Gold stay at home for their next game on Wednesday afternoon. The Marauders take on Clarion at 4 p.m. It will be Millersville's last home game before hitting the road for a four-game stretch.
