Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's soccer team used an onslaught of offensive pressure to pour in four goals on 29 shots against Holy Family on Wednesday afternoon. The Marauders defense kept the Tigers off the board and cruised to a 4-0 win.
Millersville's 29 shots were the most taken by the team since Oct. 22, 2010 against Gannon. The Marauders' four scores were the most this season and the team has now scored three or more goals in each of its first two home games this year.
Millersville (2-0-1) took more corners in each half than Holy Family did in the entire game--finishing with nine total corners in the contest. PSAC Soccer Athlete of the Week
Jeramey Robbins was held scoreless for the first time in 2013, but he found other ways to lead his team to victory. Robbins assisted two goals--one by
Zack Caracciolo and one by
Clark Habecker--to increase his team lead in points to seven.
Freshman
Christopher Sosa scored his first career collegiate goal, and senior
Ryan Rohrer netted his initial score of 2013.
Ben Johnston and
Christopher Davidson each had an assist for the Marauders. The defense was stingy for the home team, limiting the Tigers to just four shots.
Brad Benzing had a relatively easy day in goal, only needing one save to pick up the victory.
Holy Family (0-2-1) generated just one shot on goal all game and had pressure on goalkeeper Nick Algira from start to finish. Algira concluded the match with nine saves.
The first goal of the game came off of the right foot of Sosa. The first year Marauder was in perfect position to receive a rebound off of a corner kick from Caracciolo. Sosa struck the ball out of mid-air, placing it into the right side of the cage and giving MU a 1-0 lead just 12 minutes into the action.
In the 18th minute a forward centering pass by Johnston hit Robbins in mid-stride and a quick touch by the sophomore found the feet of Caracciolo. Caracciolo easily placed his target into the net to notch his first score this season and Millersville's second of the match.
With the score 2-0 in favor of the home team at half, Millersville had already outshot the Tigers 17-2 and had taken five corners, while Holy Family had not taken one.
The final frame saw the Black and Gold add two more insurance goals.
The first was again on a centering pass by Robbins. With the defense and keeper swarming the conference player of the week, he played a square ball across the top of the box and Habecker drilled home his attempt too increase the lead to three.
On the final goal, Davidson used determination to steal the ball from a Tiger defender and dribbled down the right sideline. A centering pass by Davidson met Rohrer eight yards in front of the mouth of the goal. The Manheim native punished his shot to the lower left ninety and out of the reach Algira.
For many young Marauders this was their first game of the season where they saw extensive playing time on the field as 21 total players saw playing time.
Millersville stays home for its next match, taking on Davis & Elkins this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
