Women's Tennis to Play West Chester Tuesday in PSAC Quarters

Millersville, Pa. - After finishing a 2012-13 season during which the team posted a 4-2 record in PSAC East matches, the women's tennis team is headed back to the postseason with Tuesday's slated match against West Chester.

The Marauders set out for the PSAC Quarterfinals for the second consecutive year after a four-year absence from the PSAC Team Championships. After starting conference play with a 2-2 record, the team won its final two matches of the year last week in convincing fashion, defeating East Stroudsburg 7-2 last Tuesday and wrapping up the season by trouncing Shippensburg 8-1 on Saturday.

A 4-2 record is nothing to scoff at, and the team's run included an impressive 5-4 win over Bloomsburg back on Mar. 30. Millersville hadn't beaten the Huskies in a team match since the 2004-05 season. Tuesday's opponent, however, presents a challenge for the Marauders, as they dropped this season's head-to-head matchup with the Golden Rams by a score of 5-4 on Apr. 6. West Chester is 13-8 this season, and finished 4-1 in conference play.

Two players who will be key in Millersville's attempt to win its first PSAC Team Championship match since the 2002-03 season are Melissa Plowman and Tori Davis. Plowman went just 8-11 in singles play this season, but was 4-1 in conference matches. Davis, the surprise player of the season, was 5-2 in singles play and also went 4-1 in conference action.

Plowman and Davis will need help from their doubles partners Kelsey Waite and Tori Davis, respectively. Plowman and Waite as a duo went 7-12 on the year, but were 5-1 in conference play. Davis and Wagner were 6-3 when playing together during the course of the year, and like the Plowman/Waite team, went 5-1 during conference matches.

If Plowman and Davis can capture singles wins, and Plowman/Waite and Davis/Wagner can get doubles wins, the Marauders will only need to sprinkle in one more victory from somewhere in the team's lineup to advance to the PSAC Semifinals. That could come from Alexandra Heller, who went 5-9 in singles, but was 3-2 in conference matches, or Nicole Daacke. Daacke finished the year in singles play with a 5-8 record, but was also 3-2 in PSAC East competition.

After a 7-11 season and a winning record in conference matches for the second straight year, Millersville has a chance to make some noise in the PSAC Team Championships. The quest for a team title begins tomorrow at West Chester in the PSAC Quarterfinals at 3 p.m.
