Box Score Millersville, Pa. - On Monday afternoon, the Millersville women's lacrosse team did what only one other team has done at Millersville before. The Marauders were just one goal shy of the school record in a 27-14 blowout of non-conference opponent Shpeherd.
The school record for goals in a game is still safe at 28. The mark was set back in 1997 by Barb Waltman's squad, which easily handled Philadelphia University by a score of 28-9.
Millersville (8-4) received 82 percent of its scoring from only four players. Leading scorer
Brooke Fisher and the team leader in assists,
Kathryn Kehring, each scored six goals in the victory. The six goals by Kehring was a career best and topped her previous high of four goals. 2012's leading scorer
Caitlin Shannon and sophomore
Hannah Vogel scored five goals apiece to total 22 of the team's 27 goals between these four individuals.
Ashley Henderson (2),
Ella Callahan (2) and
Abby Mack (1) accounted for the other five goals for Millersville.
Goalkeeper
Lauren Mateja recorded nine saves in the win and eclipsed the 100 save mark for the second straight season. She is now only the third Marauder in 10 years to notch triple-digit save seasons in back-to-back years.
Brooke Fisher (39),
Hannah Vogel (35), and
Caitlin Shannon (31) are now the first trio of Marauders to score 30-plus goals in the same season since Millersville began keeping track of individual goals in a season back in 2004. Only four times in the past 10 years have two indivudals scored 30 or more times in the same year.
Goals were plentiful in the first half against the Rams as the Marauders put 19 of their shots into the back of the net and led 19-8 at the break. Prior to 2013, Millersville only scored 19 or more goals in a game one time in the past two years and three times in the past four seasons.
Vogel scored all five of her goals in the first frame and Fisher's four was the second most that she has tallied in the opening period this season.
The Black and Gold cruised through the final half, scoring eight more times before taking their foot of the gas with under five minutes to play.
Head coach
Mia Hall has now been at the helm for three 20-plus goal efforts this season alone. That is the most times the Marauders have reached that feat in a season since 2008 and only the second time in 18 years that 20-plus goal games have occured three times in the same season.
Suprisingly, Millersville did not set the season mark for points in a game. The Marauders totaled 36 points against Shepherd, the same as an earlier game against Alderson-Broaddus. Also, its 38 shots was the second most this year, only to the 39 times the fired on goal against Edinboro.
With the win Millersville has now recorded its second four-game winning streak of the season and has reached the win column in eight games for the first time in five years.
An important PSAC doubleheader awaits the Marauders this weekend as they travel to Erie, Pa., to take on Gannon and Mercyhurst. They take on the Golden Knights on Friday at 3 p.m. and the Lakers on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Millersville's final home game of the 2013 season is next Tuesday, April 23 against Shippensburg. Game time is 4 p.m.
