Box Score West Chester, Pa. – Box scores don't always tell the entire story but in Tuesday's PSAC Quarterfinal match-up between Millersville and West Chester, it was evident what went wrong for the Marauders. Millersville shot 10-of-27 from the free throw line and was frustrated into 21 turnovers in a 73-62 loss that ended its postseason run.
West Chester (20-7) pestered Millersville (19-11) with a constant full court pressure, and the 21 turnovers turned into 27 points West Chester points. The Golden Rams shot just 33.3 percent from the field but attempted 14 shots than Millersville and committed just 10 turnovers. Troy Hockaday scored 24 points to lead the Golden Rams.
Anthony Coleman led the Marauders with 17 points.
Elijah Obade, the newly crowned PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year, recorded his PSAC-best 14th double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
“We knew we couldn't turn the ball over against this team,” said Coach
Fred Thompson, who has led the Marauders to nine PSAC Quarterfinals in 15 seasons. “The turnovers and missed free throws is a bad recipe.”
The Marauders started sharp, taking a 13-8 lead on a 3-pointer from
Larry Grant five minutes into the contest. Spurred by six Marauder turnovers in a five-minute stretch, West Chester ripped off a 14-0 run. Millersville weathered the run, though, and a 10-5 run in the final 3:32 of the first half, narrowed the gap to 34-31.
“Down by three at the half we felt we were where we wanted to be even though we had 10 turnovers and missed a number of free throws,” said Thompson. “But in the second half we had trouble handling their press and making free throws. When you do that, this is the result.”
With West Chester's guards extending defensive pressure well beyond the 3-point line, Millersville could not take advantage of its interior advantage. Obade made four field goals in the game but few came in the half court offense. West Chester slowly pulled away, and Troy Hockaday provided the backbreaker with five-straight points to give West Chester a 49-38 lead with 13:35 left.
Millersville never recovered.
Kyle Richardson hammered home a dunk, and
Anthony Coleman followed with at triple to cut the deficit to 51-44 with 10 minutes left but West Chester quickly pushed its advantage back to double-digits and extended it to as many as 15.
Millersville's 19 wins were the most since the 2007-08 season, and the team made its first PSAC Tournament appearance since the same season. Millersville's only two seniors, Obade and
Larry Grant, were both All-PSAC East selections. Obade led the PSAC in rebounding, blocks and double-doubles this season while Grant led Millersville in scoring and assists in each of the last two seasons.
“I told this team we are proud of them,” said Thompson. “This team helped us find our way back to where we used to be.”
“It's emotional,” commented Obade. “I had a great run at Millersville, and I'm glad I got to finish strong. I'm looking forward to the guys coming back next season and keeping the Millersville spirit alive.”
