Box Score Kutztown, Pa. - For the second time in as many meetings this season Millersville and Kutztown needed more than 40 minutes to determine a winner. And just like in the first game, it was Millersville that pulled away in overtime, winning 66-59 over the homestanding Golden Bears Monday evening.
Millersville (16-9, 12-7 PSAC), which topped Kutztown 74-68 in double overtime on Jan. 26, snapped a three-game skid. But it's never easy to stop a downhill slide, and that was certainly the case Monday. The Marauders trailed for more than 25 of the 40 minutes in regulation, and while they never fell behind by more than six, the lead seemed insurmountable until they took a one-point lead with 3:20 to go.
Even then, the Marauders and Golden Bears traded the lead four more times the rest of the way. The Marauders played their usual, stellar defense, holding Kutztown to 37.0 percent shooting while tallying 13 steals and five blocks.
Anthony Coleman recorded a career-high seven steals to go with six assists and 12 points. He was scoreless until the 11:26 mark of the second half and scored seven in the final 4:20 of regulation.
Elijah Obade swatted three shots, pushing his PSAC-leading total to 65 and breaking the Millersville single-season record held by Antwine Moore (1995-96) in the process. He also scored 12 points.
Jaymes Miller was a steadying force at the offensive end, scoring 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting. The Marauders struggled mightily from 3-point range, hitting only 5-of-24. But in the overtime
Larry Grant and
Brandon Brown hit two in a one minute span that took Millersville from a one-point deficit to a two-point lead.
After scoring 28 in the first meeting, Micah Fraction totaled a game-high 30 for the Golden Bears.
Following Coleman's driving layup that put Millersville on top 50-49, Kutztown answered right back. Fraction converted a three-point play to push KU on top by two. Obade tied the game with 1:53 left, but neither team managed a bucket for the rest of regulation. Kenny Battle missed a 3-pointer for Kutztown with 32 ticks left, giving Millersville an opportunity for a last shot. Tyler Brooks stole away the inbound pass, though, giving Kutztown 11 seconds to win it. Kutztown set up Fraction on an isolation, but his shot attempt at the buzzer was blocked by Obade.
Fraction scored the first bucket of overtime, but Grant and Brown hit threes around a Tracy Peal layup. After Brown's three with 2:11 left, Coleman picked off a pass and scored at the 1:32 mark to put the Marauders up by four. Fraction pulled Kutztown to within 60-58 with 58 seconds to go on a pair of foul shots, but the Marauders put the win away at the line, shooting 6-for-8 in the final minute while Kutztown missed on its final three possessions.
Coleman has now scored in double-figures in seven consecutive games and is shooting 48 percent from the field in that stretch. His seven steals were the most by a Marauder since Jason Blake's eight against Kutztown in 2009.
Millersville may see Kutztown again. As the No. 3 seed from the PSAC East, the Marauders will face the No. 6 seed in the opening round. As of Monday, Kutztown is tied with Mansfield for the final playoff spot.
Three regular season games remain for the Marauders, and they host PSAC East frontrunner East Stroudsburg on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. Game promotions include Millersville faculty/staff appreciation, Kunzler Dollar Dog Night and a Black Out, in which all fans are asked to wear black.
