Millersville, Pa. - Sam Oberlander started the night right for Millersville, but Franklin & Marshall won the next seven matches to win the Battle for the Rupp Cup, 29-15.
F&M (7-9) retained the Cup and won for the third year in a row, evening the all-time Rupp Cup standings at three wins apiece. Millersville (3-10) received wins from the 125-pound Oberlander, 197-pound
Joel Suter and 285-pound
Brad Ladd, but it was a what-might-have-been night for the Marauders after they suffered four close losses.
Oberlander needed only 49 seconds to pin Aaron Moldoff, giving Millersville a 6-0 lead. Robert Ruiz evened the match at 6-6 with a pin of his own at 133 pounds. At 149 pounds,
Brock Thompson led Andrew Murano 6-5 after an escape with 33 seconds left. Murano, however, scored a takedown with 18 seconds on the clock and then picked up a point of riding time for the 8-6 win.
Eric Norgard edged
Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush by a 3-2 score at 157 pounds. The match stood tied at 2-2 at the final buzzer but a 1:59 riding time total gave Norgard the win. Another victory got away from the Marauders at 174 pounds.
Tyler Hoover, aiming for his first win of the season, scored two takedowns and a three-point nearfall in the first period to take a 7-3 lead. He kept the four-point lead until 58 seconds left in the bout when Colin Gironda hit a takedown, picked up two back points to tie the match and then earned one point for riding time, giving him an 8-7 victory.
Similarly,
Daniel Cox built an early lead over Paul Alessandrini at 197 pounds. Cox scored a reversal with 47 seconds left to tie the match at 7-7, but with just 14 seconds left on the clock, Allesandrini reversed Cox and a 1:01 total of riding time gave him a 10-7 decision.
Millersville finally ended F&M's run at 197 with Suter's 4-0 decision. Ladd and Alexander Henry each scored escapes in regulation and went to overtime tied 1-1. Neither scored in the first one minute sudden victory period. Ladd chose bottom position in the tiebreaker and quickly escaped. Ladd then needed to ride out Henry for 30 seconds to win, and he did just that. Henry nearly broke free 10 seconds into the session, but Ladd quickly pounced again, driving Henry to the mat, and Ladd was able to keep him there for the final 15 seconds.
Ladd, recognized before wrestling his final match at Pucillo Gymnasium, closed his regular season with a team-leading 17 victories.
Millersville heads to Kutztown for the Super Region 1 Championships on Feb. 23.
