2013 Women's Swimming PSAC Championships
Thursday, Feb. 14 - Sunday, Feb. 17
Cumberland Valley H.S., Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Millersville, Pa. - With the 2013 PSAC Swimming Championships right around the corner, the Millersville women's swimming team is eager to enter the pool at Cumberland Valley High School this weekend. The meet will run from Thursday, Feb. 14 through Sunday, Feb. 17.
Millersville has 10 players who qualified for the individual conference championships and is in search of its first top-10 team finish at the PSAC Championships in school history. The Marauders have finished in 11th in each of the past two seasons, but a core group of swimmers, led by senior Sarah Bernhardt, are excited to grab the Marauders best finish at the PSAC Championships this weekend.
Bernhardt qualified for three events and sits atop the conference in the 100-yard butterfly. She has recorded NCAA 'B' cut times in each of the three events that she will compete in and could be coach Kyle Almoney's first NCAA qualifier during his time at the helm of the program.
Lets break the PSAC Championships down event-by-event to see where the Marauders stand against the competition.
100-YARD BUTTERFLY
Bernhardt provides Millersville with the best chance to win an individual PSAC crown this weekend in the 100-yard butterfly. Bernhardt currently ranks first in the conference with a time of 57.33 and has the fastest time in the PSAC by .30 seconds. The Vineland, N.J. native is looking to avenge a third-place result in the 100-yard butterfly from a year ago and advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career.
50-YARD FREESTYLE
Bernhardt also holds the Marauders second best position this weekend with her fourth-place standing in the 50-yard freestyle. She enters this weekend with the school record in the event with a time of 23.84 and earned All-PSAC honors in the 50-yard freestyle in 2012.
Teammate Janelle Laudermilch joins Bernhardt in the event to swim in her first ever PSAC Championships. Laudermilch qualified with a time of 25.47 and will attempt to put together her best race of the year this weekend and try to place in the top-eight positions.
100-YARD FREESTYLE
In Bernhardt's final event this weekend, the 100-yard freestyle, she will attempt to break her own school record time of 52.26. The senior swam the eighth best time in the PSAC this year when she touched the wall in 52.54. Bernhardt has the chance to become qualify for the NCAA Championships in each of her events and conclude an illustrious career in which she broke five individual school records and four relay school records.
Fellow Marauders Brigid Kavanaugh and Amanda Thomas also qualified for the conference championships in the 100-yard freestyle. Both swimmers sit within the top-40 swimmers in the PSAC. Kavanaugh's time of 54.54 places her in the 31st spot and Thomas' time of 55.00 gives her the 38th position.
100-YARD BREASTSTROKE
Laudermilch, a freshman, also reached the conference standard time in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Lower Dauphin graduate swam a time of 1:08.52 and sits in the 20th spot overall in the PSAC. Second year Marauder Brigid Mary McDonnell swam the 12th fastest time in the conference in 1:07.02 gives coach Almoney another chance at scoring points for Millersville in the conference championships.
200-YARD IM
McDonnell set the school record in the 200-yard IM in her freshman season at the PSAC Championships and hopes to have another strong outing in her second collegiate competition at Cumberland Valley High School. The Atlanta, Ga. native has her work cut out for her as she swam the 17th fastest time in the league with a finish of 2:13.12.
200-YARD FREESTYLE
One of the suprises of the 2012-13 swimming season has been the success of freshman Grace Magerr. Magerr qualified for three events this weekend and leds the Marauders in the 200-yard freestyle, an event in which a team high three Millersville swimmers qualified for. Magerr's time of 1:58.26 is the third best in program history and the 22nd best in the conference this year.
Junior's Amanda Thomas and Becca Anderson will join Magerr in the 200-yard freestyle. Thomas swam a time of 1:59.49 and is placed 30th overall, while Anderson's best finish of 2:00.79 has her seated in the 34th position.
500-YARD FREESTYLE
Magerr swam the programs best time in the 500-yard freestyle since 1999 with a time of 5:17.25. The freshman hopes to break Millersville's record this weekend and record a result higher than her current 24th spot in the PSAC.
1,000-YARD FREESTYLE
Magerr enters her third and final event this weekend, the 1,000-yard freestyle, as the current school record holder. Magerr set the record just 22 days ago against conference foe Kutztown. Her time of 10:53.29 surpassed the previous record by more than two seconds and has her positioned in the 20th spot this weekend.
100-YARD BACKSTROKE
Senior Ashley Kichline leads Millersville in the 100-yard backstroke with the 11th best time in the PSAC this season. The Souderton native set the school record at the Highlander Invitational in November when she touched the wall in 59.72. It marked the first time in program history that a Marauder finished the 100-yard backstroke in under one minute. Kichline will be accompanied by teammate Brigid Kavanaugh who qualified with a time of 1:00.80, good for the 16th overall position.
200-YARD BACKSTROKE
With the second best time in Millersville history, Kichline will be the only Marauder competing in the 200-yard backstroke this weekend. The senior swam the PSAC's 17th best time in 2:13.20 and has a chance to top her career best of 2:11.69 which she recorded a year ago.
200-YARD BREASTSTROKE
In yet another event in which a school record was set this year, McDonnell dives into the pool holding Millersville's school record in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Marist High School grad swam the event in 2:25.55 to top her previous school record of 2:26.07, which she set in 2012. McDonnell has a legitimate chance to score points for the Marauders at the conference championships this weekend in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Laudermilch and Jade Wise will also attempt to score points for Millersville in the 200-yard breaststroke. Laudermilch's time of 2:30.48 and Wise's time of 2:34.03 were both good enough to vault the swimmers into the PSAC competition this weekend.
200-YARD BUTTERFLY
Walbert will swim in the final event of the weekend for the Marauders, the 200-yard butterfly. Walbert, one of four seniors on this year's squad, swam the event in 2:16.83 this year to grab the 18th fastest time in the league. If Walbert can swim her school record setting pace of a season ago, the Salisbury Township grad has a good opportunity to take home some points for Millersville.
