Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Wednesday night's game between PSAC East foes Millersville and West Chester was what rivalries are all about. The contest featured 13 lead changes and 13 ties, and Marauder senior
Brandon Brown sank a contest runner with just two seconds on the clock to push the Marauders to a dramatic 86-85 win over the Golden Rams.
West Chester (5-2, 2-1 PSAC East) entered the game on a five-game winning streak while the Marauders (1-3, 1-1 PSAC East) entered with its slowest start in more than a decade. None of that mattered in Pucillo Gymnasium where freshman
Tavon Parker scored a career-high 19 points and carried the Marauders through a long stretch in the second half, and
Jalen Lester drilled five threes for a career-high 17 points. Brown totaled 10, but no two points were more significant than his bucket as time ticked away.
Brown had missed six of his first eight shots from the field and only one possession before his buzzer beater, he missed one of two free throws with an opportunity to tie the game at 85. Brown was able to make amends, though. The Marauders successfully defended Cory Blake's 3-point look with 20 seconds to go. Millersville pushed the ball into the front court, and Brown found himself isolated on the right wing. He attacked off the dribble and with a defender draped on him, he banked in leaner from the right block.
West Chester called timeout to set up a final play and settled for a Shannon Givens heave from midcourt. Givens' prayer was nearly answered with the ball hitting glass then iron as the buzzer rang.
Millersville shot a season-high 45.8 percent from the field while West Chester hit 45.2 percent and received 22 points from Troy Hockaday. The Marauders dug deep into their bench early when starters
Tyree Smith and
Xavier Mumford picked up two early fouls. Millersville played 12 players and received scoring from 10--37 points total.
Anthony Coleman, who had suffered a broken ankle two weeks before the start of the season and was thought to be until at least January, returned to the lineup and gave the Marauders a signficant spark. He scored seven points including a 3-pointer on his first shot attempt and an important steal and lay-up in the second half.
Millersville trailed by as many as eight in the first half, but a 12-5 run over the final 4:51 cut the West Chester lead to 43-42 at the break. Neither team led by more than five points in the second period and the game stood tied seven times. West Chester built a 75-70 lead with 5:16 to go, but Lester answered with a triple. Trailed 79-75 with 2:47 left,
Nate Bollinger sank a deep three and was fouled in the process. He converted the three point play to tie the game at 79. Millersville received to clutch free throws from
Xavier Mumford with 1:04 to go, tying the score again at 83-83. Ben Mingledough gave West Chester back the lead with two of his own. Brown hit one of two with 46 ticks to go, which set the stage for his game-winner.
The Marauders now lead the all-time series 97-93 and the last 10 games have been evenly split at five wins apiece.
Millersville faces another stiff challenge Saturday when it hosts PSAC East leading East Stroudsburg at 3 p.m.
