GAME NOTES
· A return to Pucillo Gymnasium may be just what the Marauders need. They are looking to halt a three-game skid after dropping games on back-to-back days at Indiana and Seton Hill. The Marauders are 0-5 on the road but 2-1 at home. Saturday's game starts a three-game home stand for the Marauders. Of Millersville's six losses, four have come by fewer than 10 points, and the other two came against unbeaten and nationally-ranked opponents (IUP and ESU). Millersville has also held a second half lead in three of the six losses.
· Fred Thompson and Bill Brown are not strangers, having faced each other 15 times in their outstanding coaching careers. Thompson holds the 9-6 edge and won all three postseason meetings. The two coaches have combined for eight coach of the year awards, four PSAC Championships, and eight NCAA Tournament appearances. The two teams have evenly split the last 10 meetings, but only six of those games were played in Pucillo. California beat Millersville in Pucillo Gymnasium in the 1985 regular season finale and in Pucillo in the PSAC Championship game. But after Millersville won the NCAA consolation game at home against the Vulcans to end that season, the Marauders have won eight of the 10 games played in Pucillo Gymnasium. Cal's only two wins in that span came in 2007 and 1992.
· Tyree Smith turned in a career performance against Seton Hill, scoring 23 points to go with six rebounds and a career-high four steals. It was a bounce-back effort for Smith, as he scored just 12 points total in his previous three games. Smith has scored in double figures four times and after hitting 4-of-7 threes against Seton Hill, he is shooting 41.4 percent from three. Smith started the season slowly at the line, making nine of his first 19 attempts. He has turned that around by sinking 9-of-10 over the last two games.
· Xavier Mumford continues to make an impact on the offensive glass. His 4.4 offensive rebounds per game ranks No. 1 in the PSAC. Nearly half (35 of 74) of his boards have come at the offensive end. Only West Chester's Matt Wisely has a higher percentage of offensive rebounds (40 of 77). His offensive rebounds have equated to 28 second chance points for his team--an average of 3.5 per game.
· Jalen Lester is turning into one of the best long range shooters in the PSAC. He ranks fifth in the PSAC in 3-point field goal percentage (.432) and has made at least two threes in each of the last five games. Since going 0-for-2 with two points in the opener, Lester has hit 16-of-35 threes and scored in double figures in five consecutive games. He is averaging 14.0 pints per game in that stretch. He's also hit 14-of-16 free throws.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA
· After starting 1-6, the Vulcans have turned their season around with three consecutive wins over PSAC opponents. All three wins have been by five points or fewer and all three came on their home court. Like the Marauders, the Vulcans struggle on the road, posting an 0-4 record away from home and those losses have come by an average of 9.5 points per game. During its three-game winning streak, Cal has beaten Edinboro, West Chester and Cheyney. Jake Jacubec (10 points) was the only Vulcan in double figures against Cheyney, and they needed a bucket from Alonzo Murphy with 35 seconds left to pull off the one-point win.
