GAME NOTES
· Millersville has had 10 days to stew over the home loss to nationally-ranked East Stroudsburg and now hits the road for back-to-back against formidable PSAC West opponents Indiana (Pa.) and Seton Hill. IUP is ranked No. 7 in Division II and was just taken to the wire by Seton Hill on Dec. 7. IUP and Seton Hill are a combined 7-1 at home while Millersville is 0-3 on the road. The Marauders went 4-3 against PSAC West schools in 2012-13 but 0-7 in 2011-12. The Marauders have played at IUP in each of the last two years and have played at IUP in each of the last five meetings. Millersville's last win at IUP came in 2007-08. Last season, Millersville trailed by only one point with 18 seconds left but came up empty on its final possession.
Anthony Coleman totaled 22 points in the defeat.
· Jalen Lester has quickly made an impact. After missing the first two games and playing just six minutes against Bloomsburg, Lester has scored in double-figures in three straight games, averaging 14.7 points per game and shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 9-of-10 from the line and 52.3 percent from three. His season 3-point percentage of 47.8 ranks third in the PSAC.
· The 10-day break could only help
Anthony Coleman get his legs back. The senior missed the first month of the season with an ankle injury but returned to the lineup without much practice against West Chester. Despite the rust, Coleman has scored 8.5 points and hit 3-of-7 threes in just 16.5 minutes of playing time per game so far. A career 45.2 percent shooter, he will certainly help the Marauders' scoring efficiency and production. Coleman, who averaged 13.7 points per game as a junior, is just 199 points shy of 1,000 for his career. He needs to averaged 10.5 points per game to reach that milestone by the end of the regular season. He is aiming to be the 36th Marauder to score 1,000 points.
· Millersville has made at least nine 3-pointers in five of six games. The Marauders are on pace to make 233 threes and attempt 783, which would both shatter the school record for threes made in a season (216 in in 2000-01) and threes attempted in a season (629 in 2000-01). The Marauders lead the PSAC in 3-pointers made per game (9.3) but rank 14th in percentage (.298).
Jalen Lester,
Tyree Smith and
Tavon Parker all rank in the PSAC's top 25 in 3-pointers made per game.
· After surrendering the most points to opponent at home since 2001 (96 vs. ESU), the Marauders need to improve their defense. They rank 16th in the PSAC in scoring defense, 17th in field goal percentage defense and 18th against the three.
ABOUT IUP
· IUP has won four consecutive PSAC West titles and three of the last four PSAC Championships. It is no surprise the Crimson Hawks were picked No. 1 in the preseason poll, and they have lived up to the billing, starting 7-0 and holding a No. 7 ranking in Division II. IUP thrives at the defensive end, holding teams to just 58.7 points per game, which ranks No. 4 in Division II. It ranks third in in the PSAC in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to just 38.4 percent shooting from the field and a PSAC-best 26.2 percent from three. Mathis Keita ranks seventh in the league in scoring average at 18.3 points per game, and he ranks sixth in field goal percentage.
ABOUT SETON HILL
· Seton Hill is in its first season of PSAC competition. The Griffins play host to Cheyney Tuesday night before Millersville visits on Wednesday. The Griffins have acclimated themselves nicely to the PSAC. All three losses have come by five points or less, and on Dec. 7, it took IUP to the wire before a late IUP basket handed the Griffins a 56-54 loss. Tony Morocco has coached the program since its founding in 2002, and last year's 16-12 team reached the second round of the WVIAC Tournament. The team ranks in the top half of the PSAC in both field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage. It ranks fourth in field goal percentage defense and sixth against the three. The Griffins are also solid at the line, hitting 72.3 percent as a team. Malachi Leonard is the top scorer, ranking 12th in the PSAC. Kameron Taylor and Max Kenyi also average over 13 points per game.
