Men's Basketball Heats Up in Second Half for First Win

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville men's basketball took a while to get its offense started, but when it did, visiting Rutgers-Camden could do little to stop it. The Marauders outscored the Scarlet Raptors 48-25 over the final 20 minutes for a 69-50 victory in the home opener.

Tyree Smith paced Millersville (1-1) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Nate Bollinger added 16 including 13 in the second half on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. Tavon Parker scored 10 of his 11 in the second half as well.

The Marauders shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the second, more than making up for an 8-for-33 first half that included 3-of-19 from three. The Scarlet Raptors, behind Teon Russell's double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, took advantage of the Marauders' slow start to open a 25-21 lead at the break.

Rutgers-Camden pushed the advantage to seven over the first three minutes of the second, but Millersville used a 7-2 run sparked by six points from Smith to tie the game at 33. The clubs traded baskets to keep the score tied, but Brandon Brown sank two free throws at 11:02 to start a 15-6 run over the following three minutes. During that span, Millersville received threes on three-straight possessions--two from Bollinger and one from Parker. Bollinger was fouled on his second three and converted the four-point play. Millersville made five consecutive shots and all three free throws in the span.

The Marauders continued to pour it on over the final five minutes and its largest lead of the game came with two seconds left when Matthew Smith hit a free throw.

Millersville forced 17 turnovers and turned them into 20 points. The Marauders also received 27 points off its bench. Xavier Mumford set career highs with 15 rebounds and four blocks, giving him 27 boards and seven blocks through the first two games. Brandon Brown grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds as well.

Millersville enters PSAC Eastern Division play on Nov. 20 at Bloomsburg. Tip is 7:30 p.m. MSBN will broadcast the game live.
