Slippery Rock Snatches Win From Marauders in Final Minute

Box Score Slippery Rock, Pa. - The NSCAATV Game of the Week certainly lived up to the billing as No. 23 Slippery Rock scored two goals in the final 90 seconds and the game-winner with only eight seconds to go to steal a victory away from Millersville Wednesday afternoon.

The Marauders (10-5-1) led by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 but could not keep The Rock (12-3-1) off the board. It was a damaging loss to the Marauders' NCAA Division II Tournament hopes and also dropped them into a tie with The Rock for PSAC Tournament seeding.

The Rock used a little good fortune early and outscored the Marauders in a wild final 13 minutes. Both teams scored three second half goals, but it was Josh Brake scoring off of a corner kick and Dom Francis off a long throw-in as time ticked away that propelled the Rock to victory. Slippery Rock became the first team to score four goals against Millersville since 2011 and only the fourth since Steve Widdowson became head coach in 2007.

Slippery Rock scored the game's first goal just 2:59 into the contest when Joshua Gray's throw-in was caught by Brad Benzing. Benzing, however, stepped backward into the goal after catching the ball, and The Rock was credited with a 1-0 lead.

That advantage stood until Anthony Fratini scored on a Ben Johnston assist at the 50:56 mark. The Marauders jumped in front in the 65th minute when Andrew Dukes pushed a pass through the defense to Jaime Vazquez, who was all alone in front of the keeper. Vazquez scored his eighth goal of the year to give Millersville a momentary lead.

The Rock quickly turned defense to offense for the equalizer. An intercepted cross was dribbled from deep in the Millersville zone to midfield before two on-point passes hit Peter Boylan at full speed. Boylan, with a defender on his hip, did not break stride and rifled a shot past a drawn out Benzing.

Boylan's tally started the game's frenetic finish. Just over three minutes later--with less than 10 minutes left on the game clock--Dukes took possession of a loose ball 40 yards from the goal and rocketed a shot from 30 yards directly past Rock keeper Chris Zier. The 3-2 lead didn't hold up, though. At the 88:29 mark, Dom Francis took a corner kick that Josh Brake headed high over the outstretched fingertips of Benzing, tying the game.

The contest seemed destined for overtime until a long throwin-in from Declan Brennan skipped through the box. Francis used his left foot to drill just inside the opposite post. The ball found the net with only eight seconds remaining, leaving Millersville no opportunity for a tie.

Millersville and Slippery Rock both took 16 shots, and Millersville placed nine on goal. Dukes extended a streak of consecutive games with a goal scored to five and has scored in six of his last seven games. His 33rd career goal moved him past Kyle Loughlin and Chad Meyer into fifth-place all-time. He also moved into sixth in career assists and fifth in career points (83) following the game.

The Marauders host California (Pa.) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and the outcome of that game will likely determine the team's seeding for the PSAC Tournament.
