Women's Soccer Dealt Crushing Defeat by Shippensburg

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's soccer team was 13.9 seconds away from tying the Shippensburg Raiders 0-0 on Wednesday night. In the 110th minute the Raiders' Kate Zech knocked in the golden goal to lift Shippensburg to a 1-0 victory.

With time expiring in the final overtime period, Zech dribbled into the box and the Marauder defense collapsed on the junior forward. Zech beat the defense and fired a shot past Black and Gold keeper Olivia Webber for the double-overtime, game-winning goal.

Millersville (5-3-1, 4-3-1 PSAC) and Shippensburg (6-3, 5-3 PSAC) fought toe-to-toe throughout all 109 minutes and 46 seconds of competition. The Raiders held a 16-15 advantage in shots, a 6-5 edge in shots on goal, and a 7-4 lead in corners. Both goalkeepers played evenly as Webber and Shelbie Rackley each finished the contest with five saves.

Eight different players fired a shot for Millersville in the contest. Kelsey Mattola and Savannah Hall led the visitors with three shots each against the Raiders. Mattola led the team with two shots on goal, as the midfielder played in all but three of the 110 minutes of action.

After playing to a deadlock after regulation, neither team could solve the other's defense in the begging of overtime. Both squads fired two shots in the first overtime period and both teams took two more shots in the second overtime session, before Zech fired the Raiders third, and costly, target in the 110th minute.

The overtime defeat is the Marauders first extra-period loss this season. The women's soccer team was 2-0-1 in overtime matches this year prior to Wednesday night.

The Raiders were the first team in 10 games, dating back to last season, that was able to hold the Millersville offense without a single goal.

The Marauders have just two days off before playing in their final non-conference game of the season. The women's soccer team returns home to Biemsderfer Stadium to take on Georgian Court on Friday, October 4, at 3 p.m.
