Mumford and Marauders Push Past Cheyney

Box Score Millersville, Pa. - Trailing visiting Cheyney by two with just over 12 minutes left, Millersville went into attack mode using slashing drives by Anthony Coleman and Larry Grant, long-range shooting from Brandon Brown and the hustle of Xavier Mumford to rally for a 56-48 PSAC East win.

Millersville (11-5, 7-3 PSAC) led by as many as nine in the first half and held a seven-point lead at the break, but Cheyney (5-9, 3-7 PSAC) sneaked back into the game using a 10-4 run to start the second and tok a 34-24 lead at the 14:36 mark. The Marauders tied it on a Mumford layup, and after Cheyney received two free throws from Jason Saab, the Marauders retied it on free throws from Brandon Brown.

Coleman scored on back-to-back possessions, and then it was Grant's turn, who scored four in a row. Brown drilled a 3-pointer, Grant sank two from the line and Nate Bollinger hit a mid-range jumper. In a span of less than six minutes, Millersville went from trailing by two to leading by 12 at 51-39. That one run effectively buried the Wolves.

The Marauders were hardly brilliant on the offensive end but received a balanced scoring effort with eight different players scoring. Mumford was a burst of energy off the bench, recording his first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Five of his rebounds came on the offensive glass, directly resulting in six of his points. Brown sank 3-of-5 from deep for 11 points. he also grabbed six boards. Grant added nine points, four assists and three steals.

As usual, the Marauder defense controlled the game. For the 13th time in the last 14 games, the Marauders held their opponent to fewer than 70 points, and it was the ninth time that they held a team to 60 or fewer. The win also improved Millersville to 8-2 in Pucillo Gymnasium where it is holding teams to a mere 54.0 points per game.

Saab entered the game averaging 20.1 points per game, but he was pestered into 2-of-12 shooting from the field, 0-of-6 shooting from the field and six turnovers. Cheyey was limited to 29.7 percent shooting in the game.

Millersville, battling to stay in the PSAC East title chase, stayed one game behind West Chester and two behind East Stroudsburg. The next two opponents on the slate are those very teams, and both games are on the road. Saturday's tip between the Marauders and West Chester is scheduled for 3 p.m. Fans can listen live on MSBN.
