GAME NOTES
· Millersville completed its PSAC Western Division schedule with a 6-3 league mark and sitting in third place--two games out of first--in the Eastern Division. The division schedule hits full stride Wednesday against bitter rival Cheyney, which is sitting just behind the Marauders in the standings. Millersville is 7-2 at home this season, holding opponents to just 54.7 points and 36.2 percent shooting from the field. In contrast, the Marauders are allowing 69.4 points per game on the road. In 15 seasons under Coach
Fred Thompson, the Marauders are 60-35 in league games at Pucillo Gymnasium. Thompson is 9-5 against Cheyney at home, and Millersville is 19-8 in home games versus the Wolves since 1984.
· The Marauders are playing stellar defense, holding 12 of the last 13 opponents to fewer than 70 points. They rank third in the PSAC in scoring defense 61.3), sixth in field goal percentage defense (39.8) and first in 3-point field goal percentage defense (27.9). Millersville also ranks 21st nationally in scoring defense and 25th in blocked shots. A good measure of how complete a team is defensively is combining blocks and steals, and Millersville averages 11.9 total per game. That total ranks fourth in the PSAC.
· Elijah Obade continues to lead Division II in rebounding, averaging 12.7 per game. He also is tops in the PSAC and seventh nationally in blocked shots with 2.7 per game. Obade is 23 blocks from tying Millersville's single season record. He recorded his eighth double-double (13 points/11 rebounds) vs. California, which is the most in the PSAC and sixth-most in the nation. Millersville is 6-1 this season when Obade blocks at least three shots per game. What's underrated about Obade is that he ranks second on the team in scoring average (13.7) and the Marauders are 8-2 when he scores at least 10 points.
· Anthony Coleman is coming off a season-high 23 points against No. 21 Indiana. He made 5-of-5 3-pointers and has scored at least 12 points in his last three games, averaging 17.6 during the stretch. Entering the game, Coleman was 0-for-22 from long range. He has a history of streaky shooting. 11 of his 16 career 3-pointers have been made in just two games. Over the last two seasons, the Marauders are 4-2 when Coleman leads the team in scoring.
· Larry Grant is quietly entering elite company in Millersville history. Last season, he was the first Marauder since 1988-89 to average at least 5.0 assists and the first two average 13.0 points and 5.0 assists per game. This season, he leads the team in scoring and assists again and can become the first player since assists starting being tracked in 1962-63 to lead the team in scoring and assists in back-to-back seasons. Including Grant, only 10 players in the last 50 seasons have led the team in scoring and assists in one season.
ABOUT CHEYNEY
· Cheyney is a difficult team to figure out. It is 5-8 and has lost four of the last five but owns wins against some of the top teams in the PSAC. The Wolves beat Indiana (Pa.) 64-60 on Dec. 1 and also defeated Edinboro in overtime on the road. The Wolves averaged 72.2 points per game, which ranks sixth in the PSAC, but is allowing 76.4 points per game, which ranks 15th. The offense is dangerous with leading scorer Jason Saab (20.8) averaged over 20 points per game for the second season in a row. Four different players average in double figures. It's not a particularly efficient offense, ranking 13th in the league in field goal percentage (41.8). At the other end of the court, the defense is last in the PSAC in field goal percentage defense (47.1) and also last against the three (40.5). Millersville has not won three in a row against Cheyney since taking seven in a row from 2004-2007.
