Marauders Flip Script on Cal; Hold on for 62-60 Win

Box Score California, Pa. - Just over one year ago, Millersville saw California (Pa.) tie the game late and hang on for a 62-60 win. Despite nearly the same end-of-game circumstances Friday night, the Marauders weren't going to let the homestanding Vulcans steal away another win. On this night, Larry Grant broke a tied game with two free throws, and the Marauders defensive dug in late to win by a 62-60 final.

Millersville (10-4, 6-2 PSAC), which is now 10-2 since starting 0-2, received workmanlike performances from seemingly its entire roster, but was especially bolstered by 13 points and 11 rebounds from Elijah Obade. Obade, who grew up just a handful of miles from California in Charleroi, notched his eighth double-double of the season. Anthony Coleman scored 12, including an important free throw late, and Brandon Belt added 11 with most of his damage coming on three first-half threes.

A staunch Marauder defense, which has now held 11 of its last 12 opponents under 70 points, held Cal to just one 3-pointer and came up huge in the final minutes, not allowing a single made field goal over the last 3:41.

Millersville led by as many as 12 in the game and held a 54-46 advantage over California (5-7, 4-4) with 6:28 remaining. The Vulcans used four foul shots and a basket from Quentin Harding to cut the Marauder lead to 54-52 in just a two minute stretch.

Brandon Brown answer the Cal run with a timely 3-pointer, but Cal scored three unanswered to pull within 57-55. Kemar Williams made a driving basket with 3:01 to go, but with just over two minutes left, Obade was whistled for an intentional foul, giving Anthony Lytle two free throws and Cal the possession. Lytle made both and before the ball was inbounded, Williams was called for a foul, allowing Harding to hit a pair of free throws. The four-point swing tied the game at 59-59 with 2:13 left.

Both Millersville and Cal came up empty on its next possessions, but Grant drilled to free throws with 1:13 on the clock to break the tie. Cal's Chris Williams received an opportunity to tie the game with 1:02 left. He made the first but missed the second.

Millersville, holding a one-point lead, drained the shot clock but Coleman's shot missed. Brown, however, grabbed maybe the most important rebound of the game with 33 seconds to go, and Cal was forced to foul Grant with 23 ticks on the clock.

Grant missed a key free throw that would have tied the 2011 meeting, but he hit an important one this time to give the Marauders some slight breathing room. Cal had one more opportunity to tie or win, but Lytle's shot missed and Coleman grabbed the rebound and put the game away at the line.

Millersville shot 48.9 percent from the field and a hit 7-of-15 3-pointers. It also improved its record to 9-1 when it wins the rebounding battle, which it did, 36-28. The Marauders led for 37:31 of the 40-minute game and never trailed.

The Marauders receive a stiff challenge from nationally-ranked Indiana (Pa.) Saturday evening. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and fans can listen live on MSBN.
