Edinboro Escapes With Win Over Marauders

Box Score Millersville, Pa. – Two second half goals helped the Edinboro Fighting Scots escape with a 2-0 win over the Millersville women's soccer team on Friday afternoon. Edinboro scored both goals in the span of 30 seconds and held off a blanced Marauder attack to capture the victory.

Neither team could find a way to score until the 63rd minute. Edinboro (5-0, 3-0 PSAC) played a corner into the box and the Marauders (2-2, 0-2 PSAC), failing to clear the ball, let it find the feet of Ashley DeVito on the far side. Devito took a touch to her left and fired a shot towards the net. Webber made a diving attempt but could only get a few fingers on the ball as it found its way into the back of goal giving the Fighting Scots a 1-0 lead.

Only 30 seconds later Edinboro struck again. This time it was leading goal scorer Liz Debo to tally the score for the Fighting Scots. Forward Jansen Hartmann worked the ball down the left side and played Debo at the center of the field. Debo took a perfect shot to the right side of the goal and put Edinboro up 2-0 with only 26 minutes left in the contest.

Millersville tried to get on the board when senior Kelsey Mattola dribbled through Edinboro's defense and was able to take a tough shot from 12 yards away. Similar to Cressman's shot in the first half, this one banged of the crossbar and out of play.

The first half was an even battle between both teams. The Fighting Scots held a 10-4 advantage in shots with the Marauders leading 3-2 in corners.

In the 15th minute, Edinboro had two scoring opportunities, but Millersville goalkeeper Olivia Webber upset the Fighting Scot offense with two saves. The first was a full extension dive to her right on a shot from 12 yards out. The rebound fell at the feet of leading scorer Liz Debo, who took a hard shot from point blank range. Again, Webber dove to her right, making the save and ending Edinboro's threat.

The Marauders had a scoring chance with four minutes to go in the first half. The Marauder offense forced a corner, and Emily Purcell played the ball into defender Sara Cressman. Cressman drilled a shot from 20 yards out that looked like it might sink right over Edinboro keeper Meghan Kelly's reach. Kelly could not reach the ball, but it glanced right off the crossbar and out of play.

Webber ended the day with a season high nine saves, while Mattola and Purcell each notched three shots for Millersville.

With the loss the Marauders fall to 2-2 on the year and 0-2 in PSAC play. The team looks to bounce back when they host Mansfield tomorrow, Sept. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
