Box Score Millersville, Pa. - It didn't take long for freshman
Megan Kelley to make an impact at Millersville. In her collegiate debut Thursday at home, Kelley assisted on the first goal of the game and tallied the game winner as the Marauders opened the season with a 4-1 win over WIlmington. Senior
Chrissy McLaughlin added two insurance goals late.
Millersville (1-0) has now won two-straight season openers. The four goals were also the most by the Marauders since tallying a 5-0 win over Goldey-Beacom on Aug. 31, 2009--a span of 54 games.
With the score deadlocked at 0-0 through 50 minutes, Kelley took a shot from nearly 20 yards out on the right side. The ball skipped past the keeper and found the foot of sophomore
Megan Wilson on the far side. Wilson redirected the ball into the goal to break the tie.
Under two minutes later, Kelley found herself on a breakaway, and after shaking a Wilmington defender, she beat the keeper one-on-one for what would be the game-winner.
The Marauder barrage continued 2:39 later when McLaughlin took a long pass from teammate
Kelsey Mattola and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the goal, giving the Marauders a 3-0 advantage. McLaughlin's second goal came with 11:13 to go in the game.
It was the first two-goal game of McLaughlin's three-plus season career, and it marked her first goal scored since the second game of her freshman season.
Wilmington scored its goal at the 64:56 mark, but it was not nearly enough.
Olivia Webber scored the victorious decision in her collegiate debut. She stopped five shots.
Millersville travels to Chestnut Hill on Sept. 1 for a 1 p.m. start.
