Marauders Strike Midseason Form In First Game

Box Score Millersville, Pa. – Who says it takes until the middle of the season to hit your stride? The Millersville men's soccer team had no problem getting into mid-season form during Thursday's season opening game against Wheeling Jesuit. The No. 4 ranked Marauders scored three first half goals to roll to a 4-1 victory and their fifth straight season opening win.

It was a completely different team from the 2011 PSAC Championship squad. Seven of the 11 Millersville starters were newcomers. The freshmen composed nearly half of the starting lineup as five of the 11 starters were first-year players. Three of the four goals were scored by players not on last season's roster.

Millersville started the game by dominating possession and placing multiple shots on the frame and forcing Cardinals goalie Cody Thompson to make challenging saves. Early in the first half junior Austin Hoke blasted a volley from 25 yards toward the upper right corner and it took a diving save from Thompson to thwart Hoke's attempt.

In the 23rd minute of the game Millersville landed a corner into the box and after it bounced for a bit it was eventually played out to last year's leading goal scorer Andrew Dukes. Dukes picked up where he left off last season and drilled home the Marauders first goal of the season near the left post giving Millersville a 1-0 advantage.

Just five minutes after Duke's goal the Marauders showed off their new plethora of talent.  Freshman Ben Johnston attacked the baseline on the right side and managed a pass to fellow freshman Jaime Vazquez. Vazquez played a perfect one-touch pass to freshman Jeramey Robbins, who drilled home the second goal of the game from 12 yards out.

To continue to the offensive flurry, Vazquez gathered in a pass from Robbins and fired a shot from 16 yards out. His shot was deflected off of a Cardinal defender and founds its way into the back of the net to give Millersville a 3-0 just 30 minutes into the game.

The first half was completely controlled by the Marauders as they dominated possession, outshot Wheeling Jesuit 12-1, and  led in corners, 6-2.

Wheeling Jesuit continued to battle through the second half and got on the board in the 51st minute. Cardinal freshman Sean Murphy found the ball at his feet after a skirmish at the 18 and placed the shot in the lower left hand corner.

The Marauders quickly regathered themselves when senior Matt Kadoch placed a perfectly crossed ball from Ryan Rohrer into the back of the cage in the 66th minute to complete the 4-1 victory.

Millersville is now 5-0-1 in season openers under coach Steve Widdowson and the four goals marks the third time his squad has reached that plateau in season openers.

The Marauders next game is this Sunday against WVIAC powerhouse No. 25-ranked Charleston. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium.
